My first guess would be that artsd or some other
sound thing is
running. Try killall -9 artsd and see if that helps. If you're using
KDE even the stinking system beep starts up artsd.
But only if the version of kde is less than 3.3. Since then knotify respects
it if you disable aRts. There were to many complaints ;-)
