Roger, Jannis, thank you for your kind replies and hints!
Installed bitstream.fw firmware.fw and loader.fw into /usr/lib/firmware/
but am still getting the same errors upon connecting the card in
dmesg/journalctl:
emi26 - firmware loader 1-1.2:1.0: emi26_probe start
usb 1-1.2: firmware: failed to load emi26/loader.fw (-2)
usb 1-1.2: Direct firmware load for emi26/loader.fw failed with error -2
usb 1-1.2: emi26_load_firmware - error loading firmware: error = -2
emi26 - firmware loader: probe of 1-1.2:1.0 failed with error -5
usbcore: registered new interface driver emi26 - firmware loader
I also tried installed firmware-linux-nonfree which on Debian is
nowadays only a metapackage relying mainly on /firmware-misc-nonfree
which does not contain files for emi26 anymore.
https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/firmware-misc-nonfree
One of the very few related web searches brings this up
http://fedora.riscv.rocks:3000/davidlt/kernel-ark/commit/16c23f7d88cbcce491…
but I am not sure if I am affected by it or if the commit ever made it
into Debian...
Any other hints well appreciated!
Thanks again!

I had replied but forgot to reply list. In Debian it
is called
firmware-linux-nonfree but downloading those 3 files Jannis linked is much
less bulky. They should be copied to /usr/lib/firmware/
Cheers

Hi Peter,
the package name should be "linux-firmware" or similar. I'm not using
Debian but it can see the file in the git repo here:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git…
If there's no package for your distribution, you can just download the
file from there.

Hi,
trying to get an old Emagic Esi32 to run on my Debian stable system.
Upon connecting I get in dmesg:
emi26 - firmware loader 2-1:1.0: emi26_probe start
usb 2-1: firmware: failed to load emi26/loader.fw (-2)
usb 2-1: Direct firmware load for emi26/loader.fw failed with error -2
usb 2-1: emi26_load_firmware - error loading firmware: error = -2
It seems there is some kind of firmware needed, and it exists/existed
according to this list
https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware/List
but I can't seem to find it in the apt package manager.
Does anyone have experience with this card, or any idea I could try
next?
thanks!
P
