audio-producers are only a small percentage of the userbase.
No, Apple (which is the only one of the two) just decides to drop
firewire on its not-top-of-the-line machines, thus rendering the audio
interface hardware already owned by thousands of people unusable on a
new machine. Because "it doesn't matter" ....
Apple is known for a tendency to say: so you want to do this or that?
Buy one of our top-of-the-line machines and have fun...
The SuseAG showed some insight on this as they
put the alsa-people on
their payroll and set up a certified-for-linux programme for
multimedia-devices that made Linux visible to companies like Terratec.
As a result we now have perfect support for envy24-cards.
AFAIK, we had perfect support for envy24 cards before "certified for
linux" ever existed. Are there specific things that you know which
were added/improved/fixed because of the input of h/w vendors and/or
the CFL program?
The envy-drivers have little to do with the CFL-program but Jaroslav
Kysela was hired and paid by Suse as he was working on them. I do not
know, if Terratec or any other company put great efforts into the
development of drivers for Linux because of a CFL-program. But it has
some impact if a company like Terratec puts stickers reading "yes it
works with Linux" on their boxes.
Terratec my not be the biggest player in the market but they are not
nobodys either...
ppalmers and all the other free devs do great work and achieve much more
then one would expect from near-zero-budget projects.
But if a 1billion/year company like Novell would hire 2-3 devs and send
some letters to hw-vendors to make Linux support UBS2-audio-devices...
