im afraid i've already tried that one too though :(
best thing i think for now is to get a new kernel and try kevin's
suggestion of going with mandrake's rpms
i might need help writing my modules.conf for usb audio under devfs tho

What are the permissions for /dev/dsp?
I *always* do
chmod a+rw /dev/dsp*
after running snddevices or changing the symlink for /dev/dsp
xmms and other OSS apps running as normal user complain about not being
able to find/access the device if you don't.
