You're more likely to do damage scratching off the wax imo.

The other possibility is to put the record in the
refrigerator and
get it very cold. The vinyl and the wax should shrink and you might
be able to (very carefully) chip/pry the wax off.
I will try that - like getting chewing gum out of fabric :))
