Try seq24. It "sucks less".
Also, ISTR there are some new JACK-MIDI-based sequencers in the works. I don't
remember their names and don't have links to them handy though.
And, Ardour soon will have MIDI sequencing capabilities, and it definitely doesn't
suck.
