real VU in any European public broadcast studio (the 'pirates' had
them but reverted to peak meters when they becamce legal and could
afford UK gear). I got my exposure to VUs by occasionally working

where in those days I think we lived with a perverted mix (eg
0vu == +8dbm) of Brit/BBC influences and US equipment realities. Ah yes,
tweaking the old Ampexes, that was fun!
