Tim,
I've been thinking about trying out some of the VST stuff. Can you
direct me to some information on how to get it working under Linux? I
know I'll need Wine but that's about the extent of my knowledge.

AFAIK, there is none that is specifically for Linux...
But, I've had pretty good success with a VST plugin called GSnap,
which can be found here:
http://www.gvst.co.uk/gsnap.htm
It works for me most of the time using Ardour as a VST host.
