I will try it tonight with my new machine, but I had the 8x8 working
on an older machine using CCRMA for rh9. Its been a while since I have
booted that machine, but I know it was working (if that was a worry
for you)
I do remeber that it had to be plugged in and turned on before the
machine booted

Thanks for the input. I tried different configurations (rebooting with
it plugged in, out... etc.) Unfortunately, my 8x8 does not behave like
your 2x2. At this point, I'm stumped. I'm wondering if it's a hardware
issues -- perhaps the voltage is just under a certain threshold.
