What makes you call extreme compression levels 'mainstream' ?
There's nothing 'main' about it, it's just one of the many niches.
Mayby one you are most focussed on, but that doesn't affect its
importance. There's lots of alternatives.
That super-compressed mastering trend in popular music finally seems to
be swinging back to more conservative levels. The latest Guns & Roses
disk is mastered more like an 80s release, and most sensible engineers
are arguing against the volume.
