Well I've got it down that the hum only happens
when phantom power is
switched on... Or, more precisely, that it is a LOT louder then. It is
the same hum I've been having with Jack for ages, only softer than on my
internal sound card. It happens as soon as I start jack and stops when I
stop jack and is louder the less latency there is.
Apart from the ground loop problem the other thing I can image is that
you hear you hardware 'sing'. For example, I can hear the interrupts
fired from the ohci1394 card when I start a stream.
WTF??? How odd. Dying to get a solution, it's been
plaguing me for
years. Note: It does get softer when I used an adapter to remove
grounding of the notebook, but it's still there. How odd.
Don't think its odd. You seem to suffer from ground loops.

PS: You don't happen to know whether the Apogee
Ensemble could be run
using freebob? If so, I am eager to test.
According the the schema the Apogee Ensemble has a DM1500 inside. I'm
almost sure that there is a BeBoB running. And if Apogee has not removed
the AV/C model it should be running fine with freebob. Hmm, thinking
about Apogee they are closely tight to Apple. This means the device has
almost for sure a working AV/C model inside. But to be sure someone has
to test it first.
