Just to clarify. aj-snapshot supports connecting audio ports with
JACK. We used
this intensively for connecting Jacktrip clients using
aj-snapshot's daemon mode.

I think in my set-ups I 'silently' relied on jack audio connections
being (re)connected automatically directly by clients and focusing on
actual plugging/unplugging of midi controllers, but this is indeed
really useful, with the daemon mode possibly solving the OP's issue /
question.
( As far as I see there wouldn't be any possible combination / option to
have jack audio clients only plus alsa-midi as the -j switch seems to
consider jack audio _and_ midi together, but I think this is a corner
case, maybe )
