Have you checked the input volume with 'alsamixer'?
About Jack, I have a Zoom G2 guitar fx and for some reason I have to
plug it in after the boot to get it seen by alsa.
Anyway I thought the snd-usb-audio module worked with any 'native USB
compatible' card.

it turns out that my device, USB Audiophile, does not seem to
be able to capture audio, which makes it almost useless for me.
Now the question is: Can you suggest a reliable USB soundcard
that works well with Alsa in full-duplex? Say between Eur200-400?
Are you sure it doesn't work with capture? What does jack say?
Maybe you don't have reading permission on the device. Try chmod a+r
or setting up a group for audio and adding your user.
