hi
how are you experts
getting along with beep ?
i recently installed slackware8.0
to a tiny pentium110MHz machine (AMiTY-CN)
and got OSS working
so was going to play around with
JSyn,Sfront and PortAudio
(SuperC is too much something to run on this
machine..right?)
anyway
the annoying thing is that
the accidental beep sound is too loud
comparing to the music thing
expected to come out
is there a way to simply get rid of beep
or
make the volume of beep (only) smaller

of particular bad taste. We're talking about the person responsible for

I hate to break this to you but George Bush is an extremely common name
in the US and Canada. There are probably a few thousand of them.
Regardless of the provenance of his nick, he asked a legitimate
question. If you have the answer give it to him. If you don't then
please keep the political rants to yourself. There are other lists for
that.

If you are using X11, use
$ xset b off
And I have seen that KDE has some control panel to assign error sounds.
From the console, I think you'll have to modify
your termcap.

that i used in my original post
i thought i fixed it at my yahoo account page
but
the wrong thing was my yahoo account info
(my listening to the mike malloy show
made me use that nick name
since this mail account was originally to send mails
to myself..
and..it was a trick played to myself to get really
aware of what things told meant)
now i know how to change these
and
maybe this

when there's more than one possible tab completion?

Well I took the straight way: I opened my machine and disconnected the internal speaker
cable. So no more annoying beeps!!! No one at completion and no one at startup (if I need
to hear the diagnostic beeps when sometimes goes wrong, I will connect it).
By the way, on my two Redhat 8.0 machines, I have to tab twice before completion shows the
file names. I remember with Mandrake that I only had to tab once. I really like the
one-push-tab so if someone knows how to enable this, please enlighten me.

You need to set the bash variable "show-all-if-ambiguous" to on,

I typed
locate bash | grep man
so I found a bash.1.gz, I un-gzip-ed it, launched a
grep show bash.1 -n
found the line #4422 , and it said:

.B show-all-if-ambiguous (Off)
This alters the default behavior of the completion functions. If
set to on ,
words which have more than one possible completion cause the
matches to be listed immediately instead of ringing the bell.

meaning that "set show-all-if-ambiguous on" should do what I want... but it
doesn't. Shame!

and it will look first the first instance of the word show.
type /[enter], and it will look for the next instance. voila :-)

My award for the single linux command line tip that I wish I'd known
about years earlier: cd - (cd followed by a single dash).
It takes you to $OLDPWD.
Another great one is ^foo^bar^ which will repeat the most

And while I'm at it, two commands I find REALLY handy
which may not be installed by default:

bash's programmable completion, which is way cool for example because

one more:
i recently watched a *nix wizard navigate his way around by using
pushd and popd, which are like cd except that manage a stack
of visited directories which you can use like the forward / back
buttons on a browser. I've never bothered with those but I have to
say this guy was pretty quick.

now, open a new shell, and it should work!
