Hi there,
I just thought that it would be nice to be able to record anywhere
without having a computer with you.
One would just need a live-CD and an audio interface and would be able
to use almost any computer.
I wonder which interface and distro would be best for the job.
I think usb would be the way to go for maximum compatibility and I have
no idea about the distro... I even don't know if it should use jack or
not, since I heard that it doesn't work so well with live CDs.
Any ideas?

Recording without your computer and without hard-disk made easy: Tape, DAT,
CD-Recorder, etc...
To be honest I don't think that this will ever be possible. There are too much
things that can and should be optimized to do hd-recording. That is why
manufactures don't allow you to fuzz with their hardware, its tuned and they
don't want to support you when you changed it.
And that is why this list exists (among other reasons): To give people hints
and help on how to tune your system for hd-recording.
Another reason why these live-distros will fail definitely: If its not your
computer or only a windows-computer you boot with the live-cd, it won't have
enough free diskspace to do recordings. If it has (and if there is already a
linux installed) why boot a live-cd?
It could work for playing synths, when you don't promise low-latency for
everybody, but for hd-recording its not working.
Just my two cents of opinion,

Well, I, for one, did not do anything to optimize HD recording.
Installed FC6, and fetched some CCRMA packages with kyum. Did not even

I'm not sure this is safe to assume. There can be Windows machines out

possible to write to it (I think recently, yes) and if so, what would
be the throughput in a HD recording context.
Also, it could very well be that live CDs have swapping turned off.
This would be interesting to obeserve in a recording situation. Maybe
Ardour can load in memory all at once. The idea would be to minimize
code reading from a slow device such as a CD while recording.
All in all, an interesting thing.

Thanks, that may work, I thought about dyne:bolic because jaromil said
that jack and stuff works well, I didn't know that there is an
offspring that is more tailored for audio production.

would need would be the usb interface (most older computers don't have
firewire) and probably some kind of storage device to get the data home
or to some other place or even to record to it directly. The interface
could be used at home as well. The storage device could be an external
usb disc or cd-r, dvd-r, whatever.
No need for a laptop, a hardware recorder or anything, just cheap stuff
you can use at home as well.
The result isn't going to be a high quality recording anyway, because
the location is likely not a studio or anything, but it would allow to
just pack the stuff into a small backpack and record something at any
place with a computer, using linux ;)
Currently I wonder which audio interface would fit best.

It's not problematic, unless you're dealing with ppc-machines or so,
newer macbooks also can be tricky. Other than that, just get a USB
soundbox that's supported by ALSA, check the USB device list for that:

Besides, I think it would be best if there was an all-round-device that
can be used for everything, voice (dynamic & condenser), line in, midi,
whatever. Many ins are not important in this case, I think.
I start looking for such a device, feel free to tell me if you know one.

Most don't qualify because I want a mic in without needing a preamp and
midi as well.
I haven't found the Alesis IO/2 on the usb or the alsa page, but it
looks nice.
Others my search has turned up: tascam us-122l

which has only a jack connection for the mic..

The Phase 26 doesn't have preamps or phantom power for mics, you'd
need to use condenser mics with it. It's still a great card, though, I
have it myself.
And careful with the Tascams. Some of these require firmware to be
loaded, so make sure that's included with your live Linux CD/stick.
They aren't the cheapest but around 200 is still
fine for me and I'm
gonna get me one and give the whole thing a try if I can decide on one.
The Phase 26 can be bought without the MS-Windows software for much
less (a wellknown large mailorder in Europe has it for 129,- and the
Alesis IO|2 for 139,-)

afaics the tascam US-122L is not supported by alsa, regardless of
firmware. however, that older model US-122 (without the trailing L) is
supported by the snd-usb-usx2y module.

This is supported by snd-usb-audio (google it) but, as the Tapco, it's
a 24bit only device so some applications have problems with it. If you
plan on using Jack anyway, it's no issue, though.

I got me the ua-25 now and am very happy with it, got everything
working so far. The live-cds usually just need a 'modprobe
snd-usb-audio' and that's it. I tried dyne:bolic, musix rc1(because I
had it lying around) and pure:dyne (jack doesn't start on pure:dyne for
whatever reason tough, maybe some conflict with the built-in
soundcard).
Looks like the plan is going to work out, thanks to all of you.

There is much between dream concept and viable functional
application. The
hardware, the software. We today take as ordinary that which of 60 years ago
would have stupefied even the most alert. The Zoom H4 or H2 may be what you
are dreaming of. The real question may be the issues of resolution and
control and price { 16, 24, 32 bit / 44.1, 48, 96, 192 khz}? If we are
talking about audio excellence then I tend to agree with Arnold Krille. For
