All of us are pretty much in favour of CC-style licenses, so we're not

express yourself
2. you want people to hear your music, it's satisfying to know people
like your output, you enjoy listening to music and want to give
soemthing back
All of us appear to have both reasons, with varying epmphasis one each
one.
The problem is, your Free Music Factory idea doesn't really scratch
either of those itches very well.
Reason 1 is obviously at odds with it. Reason 2 I
think doesn't fit
the factory plan because if you're after pure emulation it's not
really *your* music. You might as well just turn on the radio.
Emulation for the sake of emulation is pretty much the opposite of
creativity, which is what we are trying to promote here, right? (Of
course, if your doing it for the sake of parody, that's another
story...)
This isn't really meant as a flame and I'd
hate to be seen as trying
to squash creative thinking. On the other hand, I'm not a fan of the
idea and I'm just adding my opinion to the pot.
One point about the whole idea that I REALLY LIKE is the idea of
collaboration on a much broader basis. I think it is so cool when
people post a drum track and say, "Could someone add a bass track to
this? I'm no good at bass..." Or maybe define a general direction
and mood for the song to go into, and whoever wants to get on board is
welcome. Then you would have musicians who actually _want_ to play
this music helping out with the recording of a song.
I think there is already a place where we can do this, though... It's
called the Linux Audio Users Group. ;-)

respond to, as others have already stated my opinions, no sense
repeating them at this point in time.
I find this idea very intriguing... Would people be interested if a
place to post up a track or two was put on the web, so others could
listen to it, and post up another track on their instrument of choice,
and build like that? Could create an entire CD of completely random
artists.
Of course then you get things like, how to express a vision when there
isn't as much collaboration/agreement on it from the start.
Just ideas floating around in my head now, but it would be fun(And I
might be willing to look into doing it) to put up a musical forum of
sorts where people post up tracks, and possibly their vision for them,
for others to listen to, get inspired, and post up, and then possibly
have the engineers on the lsit come through and mix the entire thing
together, creating many different individual mixes possibly?

been done you idiot, we talked about it two days ago where were you?;)

the web.
I was thinking of doing something like a forum with the ability to
attach files, but I really dont think this is the best idea. The things
I would like to be able to do is have the ability for people to start
lines of work on each project, post up a track and have others listen to
it and add their track seperately so that others can listen to them and
add one themselves, keeping each track seperate if possible for someone
to come in and mix it all down afterwards. Now snapshots could be taken
by each musician of course of a mix up to that point they made, but I
would definitly think it would be best served keeping each track
individual until the final mixdown so as not to limit the mixdown
process(Of course I am first an engineer of decent quality, secondly a
musician of a poor quality, so this may be a bit biased;)
The other thing important about this is the ability to have a running
conversation between all those involved, possibly an initial concept
statement from the first person to post up a track, with the ability to
be modified later on?

No, I think this is about right. A bit like CVS for working audio.
Maybe what we need is to have a library of tracks per piece, with a
particular version of the piece being described as a subset of this.
I was thinking maybe have some information about mixing - volume
envelopes to be applied to the tracks for this piece. But, how you
work that at the application level is a nightmare. I think the last
thing we'd want to do is force, say, Ardour. Not that I have anything
against it, but different people work in different ways.

Yes, good idea. Forking should be allowed/encouraged, maybe, but
keeping the same library so that cross-pollination can happen easily.

has anyone actually used CCmixter? i cant remember it being mentiond on any of these
recent threads. its just that i knwo freesound has their own libcurl+xml API , and some
other free sample site, has a similar but different API and library. i think if we could
agree on a schema to share 'song components' whether sequence chunks or controller
data or soundfiles, we could build some interesting new collaborative sound apps..
