sorry for the crosspost, but i'm not getting any response from
alsa-user list and I know these devices have been discussed
here before. I've searched the archives thoroughly, but
found no report of anyone succeeding in using an oxygen
via usb with recent version of alsa. Is that still the
case?

I picked up an Oxygen today, and I seem to get as far as
getting the firmware loaded (via midisport_firmware)
and loading the snd-usb-audio module,
but I don't seem to be able to actually use it.
I have kernel 2.4.19, with the latest hotplug and fxload
sources from the hotplug sourceforge page (not from cvs).
When I start alsa, the snd-usb-audio module starts:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/alsasound restart
Shutting down sound driver: done
Starting sound driver: snd-ice1712 done
Starting sound driver: snd-usb-audio done
Starting sound driver: snd-virmidi done
Starting sound driver: dummy done
No state is present for card virmidi
When I plug in the oxygen I get this in /var/log/messages:

You mean the small keyboard? (Oxygen8). If so, yes, I managed to get it
to work using the Midiman firmware, there was a post with a URL sometime
ago on how to unpack the firmware from the Windows drivers but I don't
have the URL here.

as getting the firmware to load when the keyboard's plugged in,
and getting the alsa usb-audio module to load; but despite
all that, I can't seem to get any MIDI signal.
Can you send me your modules.conf, anything
you added to the /etc/hotplug stuff, and anything else you
had to do to get this to work?

It does not look like you have the snd-usb-audio module loaded, of if it
is, then the firmware download must have failed. I don't have the
keyboard with me right now to be able to test.
I'm looking at your previous email and it does not look like the
firmware download was successfull (in /var/log/messages). There should
be a reconnect from the device after the download where the keyboard
comes back online as a different usb device (this time with midi
capabilities) but I don't see that in the logs you sent.

Yay, Planet CCRMA now supports Redhat 8.0, good deal. I was looking at

You were correct. After investigating a bit
I discovered that I had forgotten one crucial step:
I had not mounted /proc/bus/usb!!!
I added this to my /etc/fstab:
none /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs defaults 0 0
... then I did mount /proc/bus/usb, then re-connected the Oxygen8
and ... SUCCESS! I now have midi input.

OK, I've added complete notes on how I got my Oxygen
to work at the ALSA Wiki. Search it for USB and you'll find it.
Should also work for the various Midisport models, and the
KeyStation.
