Anyone got any experience of this unit. It looks very good (on paper), seems to
have been in production for about 4 years, and is a very attractive price from
the usual suspects.
It appears to be class complient, and unlike many others doesn't have a lot of
internal routing and effects. This suits me fine - no obscure windows only
software controls!

in this price range I would go with the Presonus AudioBox 1818VSL or
Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd Gen. Actually I first ordered the
Presonus , but returned it, because of issues with my iPad and then
purchased the Focusrite. As already pointed out by several other posts
to this list, the audio quality of the Presonus as well as of the
Focusrite can't compare to my RME PCIe card, but both work out-of-the
box as class compliant devices with Linux. Usually I'm not using it
with Linux, it's aimed for usage with my iPad, but I tested both devices
with Linux. The Focusrite could be used with lower latencies than the
Presonus, but both could be used without issues using all IOs at the
same time, including the SPDIF and ADAT IOs. So assuming you should own
a good ADAT device, even the semi-pro audio quality of the Presonus or
Focusrite IOs doesn't matter. Unfortunately I only own an ADA8000 just
providing fair to middling audio quality. Can't you order the M-Track
Eight and return it to your dealer, if you shouldn't like it?

I neither have a Mac, nor a Windows machine, so I can't run the mixer

Good morning,
I can recommend the Tascam US-16x08 as an alternative in the same price
range. It is class compliant and thanks to onkelDead, the mainline
kernel now includes a mixer interface for this. The only thing I dislike
about this interface is, that when you use the builtin compressor and
EQ, that's gonna end up on your recording. And I wouldn't recommend that
thing to a Windows user. Their ASIO drivers suck. But hooked to it's own
USB bus, I love that thing under Linux.

Hi,
sorry, I can't say anything about the M-Track Eight itself. But I'm the one
who initiated the development of kernel support for its predecessor Fast
Track Ultra 8R and I've implemented the kernel interface for its internal
mixer and effects section. So, I have spend a lot of time with M-Audio
hardware on Linux.
In essence:
If there's a comparable device at a similar price point I would go for that
instead of any M-Audio hardware. I never got reliable low latency
operation, it has an incredibly loud power-on pop sound, customer support
is sub-par. Sadly, the device is un-sellable now because there's no Windows
driver anymore (which is quite ironic as the device started as a
Windows/Mac only interface and now is Linux-only).
All of this might have changed for the better now with the new devices but
for me M-Audio is still on a blacklist ;-)

Pardon, IIRC I only tested using all 18 outputs, resp. 20 outputs at the
same time. This works without issues. Focusrite claims that using all
IOs should work without issues, too,

Yes i did, some years ago i had the plan to buy a Allen & Heath ICE16D
from a private seller. Because its kind of expensive (was about 700€) i
wanted to test the device if its working with linux. So i wrote thomann
if they are fine if i order it just for testing and send it back and
they had no complains. Of course i could have done some tests on the
place where i bought it fromt this guy, but you know, its better to do
such tests at home when you have time to check everything you need.
The E-Mails are in German, if someone is interested i can forward them.
But i think if you ask on your own, you will get the same answer ;)

Well, they only say that the producer does not support linux, nearly no
one does it. it might work anyway...
