I had a similar problem after installing SuSE 10.0 on my IBM laptop.
Killing the daemon(s) didn't help. The only solution was to start
the kernel with the option acpi=off.
I read that APM could cause issues, but hadn't
seen anything about ACPI.
I'm now running the laptop with APM, no problems here.
