Hi
I have a live recording (acoustic jazz) where the engineer messed up, so
I need to copy some audio from one part to another. The problem is that
the band drifted in tempo during, so I'm looking for a high quality time
stretch that works under linux.
What are my options and what would you guys recommend?

I'm not sure how it differs, but the time shrink/stretch stuff in
the Snd <http://www-ccrma.stanford.edu/software/snd/> open source
program seems quite a bit better to my ear than do the other open
source time stretchers familiar in the Linux audio world. This
could just be my acoustic memory failing me, but I've had this
same impression several times now.

Oh dear, I knew that these speakers are total crap, but I wouldn't have
imagined that that level of crappyness even exists.. It appears that the
built-in amp can't handle the signal on that point in the left channel
for whatever reason, which reminds me of my desperate need for at least
half-way decent hardware.

I do hear it, too. Judging from the wave form (in Audacity), it seems
that there is a time-varying DC offset, especially in the left channel.
Any idea, what could have caused this?
Anyway, apart from that, it's a very nice recording.

I apologize for the bad audio. It seems that the cause was a "Triple
band parametric with shelves" plugin with all bands except the high
shelving frequencies at their default (low) setting 4.410 hz with gain
of 0 db. It must be a bug somewhere.
I replaced the file with a better one. I'd still like to hear if anyone
can spot the stretched part?
Anyway, apart from that, it's a very nice
recording.

to find evaluate / test others as well.

I haven't had very good luck doing collaboration via email and ftp; it seems to go
much smoother and be a lot more fun live with everyone in the same room, but I'm
willing to try.
I'd imagine that linux audio geeks will have have more tools in common than musical
styles or goals in common, but that might result in some very interesting music indeed.
Then again, we probably all use a pretty diverse suite of tools too. What would the lingua
franca be? An Ardour project? Ogg or wavpack files? MIDI files?
Would communication be over email? Via IRC or Jabber or something more real-time-like?

Sure, live is like nothing else. I want to explore what the
strengths and weaknesses of distance collaboration might be.

that, but no sequencer I know of is going to *think up* stuff like that, on the fly, in
the middle of a rehearsal.

is totally all over the stereo image.. It almost sounds like two snaredrums..

I've done some remote collaborative recording, even though my
band mates all live within a 20 minute drive. Our guitar player
wrote sketches of the parts he wanted on bass & drums. The bass
player and I would fill in or adapt what he wrote, we'd practice
as a group and play some gigs. To jump start the recording
process the guitar player would multitrack record his final
guitar part, a click, and audio versions of the MIDI parts for
the other instruments onto individual tracks. The bass player
and I would each get a CD with all of this on it which we would
each load onto our computers. I'd bring that into Ardour. The
bass player used something else, and the guitar player yet
something else. WAV files on CDs was one common denominator and
it allowed our recordings to be sample accurate (not that our
playing was) even though our computers all have different clock
speeds. The clock speed issue is why I couldn't record along
with my MIDI system and expect my drum tracks to align with a
guitar recorded on another system.
Do you have any music ready for a drummer? Do you want to start
from scratch? Should I come up with some grooves and send them
your way somehow?
Maybe you could introduce yourself too?
I think it's a good idea for LAU to see some of this discussion
as it might help us all get an idea of how to grow Linux involved
music.

Have you tried using Csound and the Phase Vocoder opcodes? I remember some
time ago a thread in the Csound list about comparing the quality of time
stretch attained by Csound in comparison to proprietary software. If I
remember well some thought Csound was superior. I thing is quite good.

Well the band is "us" (I wrote the tune and play piano). We recorded a
whole evening of two sets, but the engineer messed up big time, first he
placed the directional microphone on the saxophone to face the audience
not the sax. There were a complete tune he didn't record at all, and a
few where hes protools dicided to stop recording at one or two places
during the song.
P.S.
Have they got rid of the crap^H^H^H^H sound engineer?
He'll probably not re recording for us again :-)

Why don't you use the timefx feature of ardour?
energyXT2 will also do what you are looking for:
