Processor:
So it looks like I go for a intel i3 processor, with integrated gpu.
Probably a good choice. Intel processors are able to handle more heat than
the ones from AMD.
Anyway, I'm a fan of Asus MBs, either Intel or AMD
processors. I used
Most motherboards usually works, but Intel is generally less tweakable,
which could be important if you want a silent computer.
to work for AMD but frankly right now it's
pretty hard to beat Intel's
Core i5 & i7 offerings. I've got an i5-661, i7-920 and an i7-980x.
They are all quite nice at different price points and the i5 is very
energy efficient.
MB:
Does it make sense to go for an Intel motherboard when I have also a Intel
processor? Then it should fit right ;) Like the Intel Desktop Board DH55HC
for example?
Asus is also mentioned pretty often indeed, MSI too. Which is the best,
that's all I have to know ;)
Power:
When it comes to a power supply I was thinking about Enermax PRO82+ 385W. I
heard that brand is good...

Cases:
There are pretty some option these days. Towers, mini-itx, htpc. I like the
style of the Antec ones ( antec Solo-EU Quiet Mini Tower Case, NoPSU, for
example).
Smaller is more mobile and looks nicer, but what is better and more silent?
Bigger is more silent. bigger => colder => more silent.
Another (extremly important) factor to look out for is that the PSU is
placed at the bottom of the case, and not anywhere near the CPU.
Antec, fractal design and coolermaster are some manufacturers
providing this design.
Memory:
Any recommended brands, type and speed?
Pick the one with the lowest price/performance ratio, and check that it
works properly using memcheck after installation.

Yeah, it works great. Not very cheap though. You probably
still need one or more fans for the computer case, but the advantage
is that you get control over which fans you have in your
system (a noctua fan running at 400RPM is extremely quiet),
you can easely replace old fans, and you can avoid
fans changing speed depending on the temperature (which all
PSU-fans do).
As long as the PSU is placed quite far away from the CPU (for instance
a computer case where the PSU is placed at the bottom),
you have a tiny bit of ventilation in the computer case, and
you don't have a huge gfx card or other
things which consumes lots of power or generates heat, it
shouldn't be a problem using a fanless PSU. Infact, even that tiny
bit of ventilation might not be needed anymore with the
new fanless PSU from seasonic.

I built a system using this mb.
DFI MI P55-T36 mini-ITX M/B
and an i5 750
it seemed to work quite well and be power efficient.
I haven't done one for myself because I need firewire.

I also hear some rumors about m-audio pci cards, not working very well with

trouble here?

This is kind of disturbing. Isn't there a Wiki or database somewhere that one can
input a motherboard, cpu, gpu, kernel and rt patch, and check "working",
"not working", "has problems", etc? Maybe also a field for "IRQs
adjustable in BIOS yes/no"?
I've seen these kinds of community-maintained matrices for many other linux hardware,
so why not for motherboard/CPU/GPU combinations?

As I see you are buying 2 500GB hard drives can I suggest
(unfortunately at higher cost) the WD Enterprise Class RAID capable
drive?

These drives have much longer lifetimes and are completely RAID
compliant with features like time limited recovery.
I tried to set up RAID1 and RAID0 with the 1TB version of the Green
drives you are listing and they simply didn't work well. A lot of
these Green Series drives park the heads quite quickly (to save power)
but unfortunately this causes them to wear out faster. They are I
think generally better suited for machines that aren't on all the time
or in heavy use. Watch your SMART data if you go that way.
Why 2 drives by the way? One for the system and the second for audio?
Note that these RAID drives do tend to be a bit more noisy, but not
terribly, and may consume more power so you'll likely need to do a bit
more noise control than with the green drives.
As for the DVD take a look at the Optiarc AD-7240S as a drive that
seems to work very well with cdrecord and I think Linux in general.

As for the fan I purchased a CoolerMaster V8 and found that the thing
was so tall that it wouldn't fit in any of my cases, not even the
fuller tower CoolerMaster Cosmos. Make sure you work through all the
dimensions of your system before you buy one of these monster fans.
Again, for a silent PC at a reasonable price I'd still probably look
at water cooling first, but I've never actually built one so I have no
experience to lend to the discussion.

I do backup the important parts of my home-folder.
And /etc, /usr/local/src (where my local svn-stuff is), /var/lib/mysql (where
my mysql-tables are) and some other important places.
Backing up whole '/' imho is only feasible a) if you really need to put the
system back up real fast by booting from a rescue-cd and restoring the backup
[*] or b) you have to keep the data and a system that can read it for several
years for legal reasons.
[*] Use a backup-program where "restore" is only a cp- or a tar-call.
rsnapshot has proven to be good here at my installations.

I back up /home, /audio, /var/lib/portage/world and /etc. On Gentoo
pretty much everything I need to recreate my setup is in /etc so
that's pretty easy. The world file on Gentoo is just a text list of
the apps I want installed. Portage can create a system from nothing
but that. However I need /etc/portage to get any machine specific
settings. All the other things like network configuration, etc., is
kept in /etc on my machines.
If you run mysql then back up databases as Arnold suggests.

I back up /home, /audio, /var/lib/portage/world and /etc. On Gentoo
pretty much everything I need to recreate my setup is in /etc so
that's pretty easy. The world file on Gentoo is just a text list of
the apps I want installed. Portage can create a system from nothing
but that. However I need /etc/portage to get any machine specific
settings. All the other things like network configuration, etc., is
kept in /etc on my machines.
If you run mysql then back up databases as Arnold suggests.

suggesting you possibly buy
data center drives (which happen to be RAID capable) because they have
better specs, last longer and don't cost all that much more (as a
percentage of the complete system cost) than green drives. Either
drive family will likely work well for you.

drives you are listing and they simply didn't work well. A lot of
these Green Series drives park the heads quite quickly (to save power)
but unfortunately this causes them to wear out faster. They are I
think generally better suited for machines that aren't on all the time
or in heavy use. Watch your SMART data if you go that way.
Why 2 drives by the way? One for the system and the second for audio?
Note that these RAID drives do tend to be a bit more noisy, but not

OK, I brought up 2.6.33.7-rt29 tonight. It runs, but I am seeing some
video problems. However I'm not sure they are any worse than what I
see on 2.6.35-gentoo-r5. (The newest kernel) They seems to be related
to running firefox-bin (the 32-bit version) with the 32-bit version of
Flash so that I can watch Hulu. The platform basically works. I'm
running KDE with 2 screens, glxgears at about 1400FPS, Firefox-bin
running Hulu and a few other things. It works, but if I try to move
Firefox from one monitor to the other X completely crashes.
I do not, however, think that has anything to do with rt-sources as I
sometimes see the same thing running the Gentoo kernel with the Intel
video driver.
If I was building something new at this point I don't think I'd rely
in the built in graphics device and would probably choose Nvidia once
again. Intel graphics doesn't seem stable enough under Linux right now
to recommend. No problems under Windows, but Linux is sort of hosed.

You can see a review of the i5-750 with that MB at Techspot
http://www.techspot.com/review/193-intel-core-i5-750/ . BTW, you have
realised that the four core processors do not include a built in GPU ? You
will need a video card as well. The two core processors have the GPU, but
the four core one uses that space for the extra cores. I think this is
sensible because nobody is going to build a high performance machine and
then use on chip graphics, so the GPU would basically be wasted.

Someone - Ken maybe? - mentioned an issue with the integrated GFX
machines not working with the real-time kernel. That's a good point
and one I cannot speak to at the moment as I'm not running the
rt-kernel on that machine at this time. I could look into trying it
out, if I get some time, but it would likely be a week or two before I
could report anything back. I think the safest bet is probably NVidia,
but they also have problems at time with different kernels. Linux is
SUCH a crap-shoot when it comes to this stuff. There are never any
guarantees.
I have more faith in Gentoo getting around this sort of problem in a
timely manner. I don't know what folks using Fedora, Ubuntu or other
pre-packed binary distros do. I just brought up a Ubuntu PowerPC
machine I'm I'm already hitting little roadblocks on that machine.
You have a PS without fan? Most PS I see have a fan inside (120mm)
Good point on that. My older CoolerMaster cases are old designs so PS
on top. The newer CoolerMaster Cosmos is on the bottom which is nice,
although it was a bit more difficult (but not impossible) to do some
of the front switch wiring.

That's why you have a midi tower and no mini tower I guess...
Another (extremly important) factor to look out for is that the PSU is
placed at the bottom of the case, and not anywhere near the CPU.
Antec, fractal design and coolermaster are some manufacturers
providing this design.

the final production lots and sell to folks like us - but they wanted
so much money for the new processor that it made no sense to me to go
that way.
A good plan in the beginning but not executable when I wanted to do it later.

machines not working with the real-time kernel. That's a good point
and one I cannot speak to at the moment as I'm not running the
rt-kernel on that machine at this time. I could look into trying it
out, if I get some time, but it would likely be a week or two before I
could report anything back. I think the safest bet is probably NVidia,
but they also have problems at time with different kernels. Linux is
SUCH a crap-shoot when it comes to this stuff. There are never any
guarantees.
It was me, and AFAICT nobody answered that question either.
Neither I nor anyone I know can afford $US700+ for a "crap shoot". How can one
buy a system without knowing if the graphics chip works with RT kernel first? Surely there
must be some way to find out short of spending the money and then having to return it (or
switch distros).

Probably a good choice. Intel processors are able to handle more heat than
the ones from AMD.

How hard is it to?? upgrade a processor later? I'm thinking of buying a i3
now, but like to be able to upgrade to a i7 later.
Most motherboards usually works, but Intel is generally less tweakable,
which could be important if you want a silent computer.
So then MSI or ASUS might be better. But is that working with the integrated
GPU?
I have more faith in Gentoo getting around this sort of problem in a
timely manner. I don't know what folks using Fedora, Ubuntu or other
pre-packed binary distros do. I just brought up a Ubuntu PowerPC
machine I'm I'm already hitting little roadblocks on that machine.
You have a PS without fan? Most PS I see have a fan inside (120mm)
Good point on that. My older CoolerMaster cases are old designs so PS
on top. The newer CoolerMaster Cosmos is on the bottom which is nice,
although it was a bit more difficult (but not impossible) to do some
of the front switch wiring.

Yes, but also check out www.silentpcreview.com.
Bigger is more silent. bigger => colder => more silent.
That's why you have a midi tower and no mini tower I guess...
Another (extremly important) factor to look out for is that the PSU is
placed at the bottom of the case, and not anywhere near the CPU.
Antec, fractal design and coolermaster are some manufacturers
providing this design.
