Hi all,
I recorded this fabulous movie from the 1920s, "Faust" by German
filmmaker Murnau, as it was shown on TV. It has a fabulous soundtrack
which is akin to bands like Univers Zero and Art Zoyd but in a lighter
mood so to speak. Even perhaps an enriched version of The Residents.
In short, it's a good listen and a good inspiration for meldoci and
rythmic moods. Moreover, according to IMDB it seems there are several
soundtracks, so it could be unlikely for me to rent the exact same DVD.
I could load the recorded track into Kino and save only the audio (I
guess - I never did it yet) but that takes an awful lot of time because
Kino will have to convert the file and the movie last about two hours,
so that's a lot of processing time.
My question is, is there an utility out there that will separate the
audio from the images of a recorded track and record the audio in a
separate track (possibly at a higher speed than regular viewing) ?

I believe that what you seek is mencoder.

I use mplayer for this as in:
mplayer -vo null -vc null -ao pcm:fast:file="$OUTPUT" "$INPUT"

The beginning song for the credits (the only song in the movie) sounds
a bit like some In Extremo (the German folk metal band with the
bagpipes) but the rest is way out of their domain. When some very short
processed voices are introduced as the movie goes towards conclusion
around the time Gretchen is in prison and dreaming of past days it
becomes totally eerie.
I sure would like to know who did that score since that person might
very well have other interesting recordings.
For some it might be sacrilege to do this for a silent movie; for me
it's a great mesmerizing soundtrack :-)
I use mplayer for this as in:

When I was in high school, my home town had a pizza place that had a
theater pipe organ in it, and once or twice a month they would play old
silent movies and their organist (who had made his living during the

Many movies from the silent era had original scores, sometimes more than one,
and were premiered with orchestral accompaniment. Not one movie ever was
shown silent, at least someone always played a klavier in the theatre. The
notion of "silent movies" was unheard of :)
In the Faust case Werner Richard Heymann and Paul Hensel wrote different
scores. Many original scores have been lost. People don't stop to write new
music for silent movies though.
You're probably aware of this and of course you're right about the
non-existing technical soundtracks in prints from the era and reproductions
of these.
But there are lots of Hollywood studio re-releases of silent movies (all of
Chaplin for example) with soundtracks, that sometimes even carry original
music from the time.

combination of both the film and the new real-time soundtrack being
recorded, do you know how this could be done ?

The easiest way I know would be to use xjadeo and Ardour. Xjadeo lets
you watch video in sync with the Ardour timeline. When you have composed
all the music you then export the audio from Ardour and use mplayer,
avidemux or whatever to combine it with the video file.
