Hi!
I'm unable to play audio through my hdsp cardbus + multiface setup.
I have a Dell Latitude D420 running Ubuntu Edgy. I have booted with
noapic and I am able to load the firmware and run hdspmixer. I can
play audio through the SPDIF inputs and I can monitor the audio on
headphones attached to the line out.
I have the following .asoundrc:

I tried to play a wav file through the system like this:

At this point hdspmixer shows all channels at maximum volume with the
OVR lights on. No sound is played. The aplay command never returns.
If I remove the CardBus card and reinsert it hdspmixer returns to normal,
but sometimes the mouse pointer hangs erratically when I do this, but the
keyboard still works.
If I try to start jackd, it seems to succeed initially, but then gets killed by
the watchdog:

Hi Paul,
I got rid of .asoundrc and used plughw:1, same result, hdspmixer lit up like a
christmas tree, no sound, and aplay never returns.

This is the same firmware I have on my desktop PC, which does work
using the PCI adapter. Unless you are saying that this firmware
has problems specifically with the CardBus adapter?

Given the recent progress of Freebob with MOTU devices, I feel user
prefs may shift away from RME.

I tried 2.6.18.2 and it makes no difference. Haven't gotten around to
messing with firmware, I don't really know what I'm supposed to be
doing - I've got an old multiface and a new cardbus adapter...
At this point I'm ready to give up on RME. What's a good alsa-compatible
replacement? I need something with 8 analog inputs, and SPDIF would
be nice too. Already have a desk so don't need pre-amps.
Looking at a Terratec Phase 88 Firewire + Freebob. Pretty cheap too
considering the cost of a multiface + adapter. Anyone using this sort
of setup?

Hi,
3 weeks ago I tested all combinations: old PCMCIA, old Multiface,
recent PCMICA, Multiface II. It worked in all 4 possible combinations
of PCMCIA and breakout box. My system is Ubuntu dapper (2.6.15-27
kernel with libasound2 1.0.10-2ubuntu). My old PCMCIA reports "rev
0a", don't know the firmware on the newer PCMCIA which I checked (it
was also used and probably has an older firmware) but I can find out
if anyone is interested.
Last year I couldn't get the new PCMCIA to work with my old
Multiface at all, therefore I bought an old PCMCIA card.
Please keep me informed as I just ordered a new Multiface II with
PCMCIA. I can report back to the list when it arrives. I hope it
works!

I downgraded to firmware 11 and the card now works in Windows!
I can play a wav file with sound recorder at any rate. hdspmixer looks
a bit broken (all the OVRs are on) but I'm not too worried about that...
now to reinstall Ubuntu :)

I flashed the CardBus adapter to firmware version 11 in windows,
and now everything works in both Windows and ALSA!
Firmware 15 doesn't seem to work in either Windows or ALSA, at least
not with an old Multiface.

I had it once, and when it happened, syslog also has a message -
"Could not provide power to carbus slot".
Reinsertion of the card did nothing - all channels at maximum as well.
It was curied by disconnecting everything, cardbus from laptop,
multiface from cardbus, power from multiface and connecting again.
Also, seems linux does not always like cardbus insertion/removal.
Try to switch everything off, insert cardbus (connected to multiface),
power on multiface, and then power on laptop. This is the only
sequence that works always.
If I remove the CardBus card and reinsert it hdspmixer
returns to normal,
but sometimes the mouse pointer hangs erratically when I do this, but the
keyboard still works.
If I try to start jackd, it seems to succeed
initially, but then gets killed by
the watchdog:
Seems to be some strange things with interrupt handling.
Don't give up yet. Hope that helps.
