Hi List!
I'd like to reproduce the percussive sound that can be heard used as
some sort of "snare" in this video
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQcI7oKE1pc>, you know the "marble on a
glass table" thingie? I'm guessing it's a typical subtractive analog
synth sound (with a special reverb, apparently) so maybe there can be a
way to approximate it using our arsenal, maybe SynthV1 or ZASFX?

Sounds like a Roland 808 snare sound. You might want to check out the
snare ZynAddSubFX preset from the Mysterious bank #2.

Waldorf wrote a very good howto for their Attack drum synthesizer on how
to create some iconic electronic drum sounds. This also includes the 808
snare:

I've applied this method to several hardware VA synths I have and, with
a bit of tweaking here and there, always got some convincing 808 snare
emulations.

I think Philip is looking for the tambourine. I'm not absolutely sure, but I
think this was TR-707, but even that should be part of a lot of analogue drum
programming guides.

I was recently looking for that same sound indeed (it's perhaps best known
from JM Jarre's "Oxygene Part IV", see

I have this old "Hexawe" drum sounds archive sitting on my harddisk for ages
now (it's still available after all the time, just
wget http://www.hexawe.net/mess/200.Drum.Machines/drums.zip), and in there,
I found that sound in drums/KorgMP7/Quijada.wav.
Of course, re-programming it with your weapon of choice is the more sporty
solution, but if you're impatient.. :-).

downloads. Pressed Go and Doh!! 301MB and I'm on dial up. that's 18 hours
worth. It's still worth getting, but a bit at a time in between other dl's.
Hope the server has resume support. Yes it has, as wget has just had to
re-connect after a connection closed at byte..... .

there are no issues to extract it using unrar from Arch's extra
repository.

It's a special feature of the Waldorf Attack's oscillator section. From
the manual:
"The Crack Modulator was designed especially for creating hand clap
sounds. Technically it is an amplitude modulation using a sawtooth

amplitude, whose amplitude / modulation depth is controlled by an envelope.

Hi Philip,
yes you can do that subtractively. I'd suggest this:
white noise as sound source
and a lowpass filter (combined with a constant frequency highpass or try
a bandpass. I believe specialised bandpass filters are common in
analogue drum machines.
Use an ADSR envelope on the source volume with a longish attack
Use an LFO (sawtooth/ramp down) on the filter frequency
Or use a short ADSR on both filter and volume and then apply a delay.
There are two distances between the "bounces" in this video, that means
you should have a way to change the LFO or delay length (perhaps mapped
to MIDI note).
If you synth has it you can also use a loopen envelope to achieve the
"bouncing" effect. That is probably better, since you can better adjust
the characteristic of the "bounce".
I'm not familiar with purely GUI based synths, but I'm sure Yoshimi can
achieve that. A well-featured virtual analogue can also do it. Amsynth
or AMS spring to mind as well. I seem to recall that whysynth was
well-regarded. Other
options also include PureData and Csound and possibly Faust.
The reverb in this recording sounds a bit like a spring reverb, which
you can find anywhere, as LADSPA, LV2 or - I'm sure - native VST or
maybe as a standalone tool. Jconvolver also includes a spring reverb
impuse response. You could use that with other IR plugins. You can
search your distros package repository for IR or impulse response or
convolution. If you have a lot of things installed, you can also try
your favourite DAW and browse through the list of available effects.
