Hi everybody,
i just wanted to share some pictures from "Verdi" theatre in Como (Italy)
where i've recently recorded Ludwig Van Beethoven's "Heroic".
There were about 35 musicians, and 9 microphones, 6 on the stage to catch
the "sections", 2 far from the stage to catch the natural sound of the
orchestra and one dedicated to the natural reverb of the theatre.
Obviously i've used Ardour on GNU/Linux :-)

This must be one of the weirdest mic setups for an orchestral
recording I've seen, I wonder how it sounds.
Any chance you could make a small fragment of the original
tracks available ? AFAIK under Italian law you can dsitribute
59 seconds for 'scientific purposes'.

Every medium-sized Italian town has one like this... Maybe not
for long anymore as the Berlusconi government is doing its
best to kill them.
Nor are they all great acoustically. For example Parma's opera
house is extremely dry - the result of adding a layer of plaster
with each restauration instead of removing the old ones and
putting on a single new layer.

I guess also number of performers (which from the pics seems relatively
small) can also influence the choice?

So then we agree - it's not necessarily crazy. Maybe we just need a
bit more info.
One thing I couldn't tell was whether he possibly had other room mics
not shown in the picture? I didn't try very hard but I only counted 6
mics on stage. Possibly he had an X-Y pair out in the hall somewhere?
It would be interesting if Giorgio could supply a room layout picture
showing where the mics were, or maybe just a mix list?
