Hi,
I want to learn to add effects on my tracks in qtracktor or ardour.
Where can I find information about how to create the best effects?

Seriously, you'll have to experiment with various effects to learn 1)
what they do and 2) whether they're really what you want. Some of the
more common effects include reverb, chorus, and EQ. You'll want to learn
about the dynamics effects too (compression, limiting).
It takes a lot of time and effort to learn the details of digital audio
production, and most of that time/effort will go into actually just
*listening* to what the various effects do to your recorded sounds.
You can also analyze some of your favorite music to ascertain what kind
of effects are used there, then try to recreate the same effect on your
recordings.

example) and just route that track or channel (not the drums etc) in

You mean in rosegarden and muse you can add also LADSPA effect plugins?
About dssi. I thought dssi where instrument plugins, but they can create
effects too?

You mean in rosegarden and muse you can add also LADSPA effect plugins?
About dssi. I thought dssi where instrument plugins,
but they can create
effects too?
dssi are indeed instrument plugins, but not exclusively. in fact you can
even run windows vst's audio effects through dssi-vst proxy, see? otoh,
there are audio effects plugins which can be controlled via midi which
also fills the bill.
you can look at dssi as ladspa plugins with midi input.

There are some rules to follow and some other not to.
I suggest you to learn dynamic compression + eq first which is the start for
a good sound assuming you put mics in the right position before start
recording and do a good job on your analog mixer first. Otherwise you won't
get anything good from your tracks :-)
In ardour:
put dynamic compression + eq chain only on inserts, NEVER put those fxs on
sends
put reverb/delay/flanger/phaser on a separate bus and route signal flow with
a send from your track to the fx bus, NEVER put those fxs on inserts,
otherwise you will lose the dry signal... not good at all

Not exactly right. You will certainly want to apply the same acoustics to
several tracks to get a good composition of the space. But it is also
possible to have a delay in one track only for that track. And most
(room-)effects provide a wet-dry-control so you have the original signal too.
Sometimes its even good to have guitar-amp/distortion on a send instead of
having them as insert. That way you can add distorted signal to the dry one.
Heck, even Mark Knopfler does that on his guitars...
After all, one rule applies: If it sounds right, its right!

.. indeed, and you can put individual reverbs in each track too, with
automation lines if you want. that imho sounds good and is used by
electronic music quite alot. this can give you some ideia of what you can
get with that:

i would say that "insert vs bus" effects is cool for sound treatment of
acoustic music. but even so you can fly away if it sounds good, and that
happens...
