Hi,
I'm using my bassguitar without an amp. I use a dmp 3 preamp and my
maudio audiophile 24/96. How can I make my bassguitar sounds good this
way? Is there software which can make the sound better and how?

depends on what sort of bass sound you want. i would suggest playing
around with ladspa plugins such as the caps series. the most common
things you would want to do with a bass guitar sound are eq,
compressor/limiter and possibly overdrive/amp sim.

description of what sort of sound you are after and people could give
you examples of what ladspa plugins and settings they would use to get
it? just an idea.

When I record bass, I go through a tube pre-amp (like one of the ART
ones) and then direct into the board (in my case, a Hammerfall RME
interface). A tiny bit of EQ or compression helps also, although the
tube pre-amp add some nice warm tube compression and even a tad bit of
overdrive. A little bit of flange/phase shift or chorus can add a
little character to the tone also, as long as it isn't overdone. But
the latter can be added in post, so you can adjust to taste without
ruining the original (nothing worse than getting a perfect take only
to find out you had too much flange or something that can't be removed
later).

right brand of strings to bring out the best sound the bass has to
offer. I'm lucky to live near a great guitar shop where I could get
some good advice. They were nice even though my two instruments are by
most measures not so good. However they were good and pointed me
toward a couple of different options that worked out well. I don't use
the same strings on each instrument and personally will never
recommend bass strings at all as I think the right choice depends too
much on the instrument.

Mostly it's just me, and I'm not a bass player but I own two, but to
me it's mostly about gentle EQ. I find I cannot change the real nature
of the instrument itself but rather can just move it a bit in the
direction I want it to go.

What bass are you playing?
How are you monitoring?
What sound are you looking for?
No matter how hard I try I cannot make my Ibanez sound like Chris
Squire's Rickenbacker. However it can sound like a solid rock bass.
All depends on what you are trying to do...
