Hi, I noticed that Jamin requires the steve harris plugins to compile.
Does this mean that jamin uses the SC 1-4 compressors or is the Jamin
compressor it's own thing?
Is there a way to host the SC compressors on their own ( for a lighter
weight option ) and still get the kind of visual metering of input,
output, and reduction?
Or alternatively, is there any way to control the Jamin parameters
externally, either via midi cc's or an api?

believe you mention that you will be releasing API details soon. Does
that mean an API is in the works but not made yet?
I can understand why it wouldn't be a top priority, but I would think a
way to hook Jamin up to generic hardware control systems ( midi boxes,
etc ) would be quite a useful addition. An API giving access to the
various input controls and output display would make such an extension
pretty easy.
My own purpose is hopefully to be able to use it to replace the usual
bank of compressors and eqs used in live sound just before the final
outs. I do live techno shows, so it makes a BIG difference to be able to
get our final mix closer to the hotness and loudness of a mastered record.

familiar with OSC. I also don't think we should add MIDI control. If
we have OSC for all the parameters it can be done externally.
Well, it's slightly tricky, we need to either poll the OSC librarys for
incoming packets in the GTK idle thread or let it use its own thread and
signal the JAMin control stuff, but I cant remeber if that cares what
thread it was called from or not.
I'l try to find time to add control for one parameter over OSC, that
should make it obvious how to do the others, but it will be after the next
point release goes out I think.

I am curious as to how to get visual indication of how much gain
reduction is going on though. Would AMS + meterbridge suppy that? That
does show up in Jamin right? I find it a lot easier to tune a
compressors settings if I can see when it's working and by how much. The
metering on the waves plugins are very well designed that way. Does the
SC4 ladpsa interface allow one access to that data?

Yes, ams can give you access to them. Nevertheless I didn't find something to
display the value it output. But with galan and its controls you can have a
fader going up and down corresponding to the reduction and level which looks
kind of cool but seems to be cpu-eating. :-(
There should be levelmeters in galan and ams...

fader going up and down corresponding to the reduction and level which looks

Well, input and output are audio signals, so if you difference them you
will get something complicated, but not the difference in amplitude.
You could take the envelope of input and output and difference the
envelopes, but it will be a different envelope follower to the one in the
plugin, so it wont be quite right anyway.

This is news to me. I just checked the page and that's what it says
alright :) I generally don't think in terms of an API for an
application (more for a library). At present the only way to interface
with the running application is scene changes using OSC. I can
understand what you want to do but it appears to me that the only way we
could reasonably provide that would be with some sort of external
interface like OSC for every function in the GUI (not that that's a bad
idea, it would just be a lot of work). If you have any suggestions on
how to implement something like this let us know. I believe that at
some point in the past Steve was talking about divorcing the processing
from the GUI but I'm not sure if that's going to happen or not.

It would also make it really easy to hook up real time control options
without worrying about the control code interfering with performance.
For example, programming a midi slaved gui in portmidi and fltk is
surprisingly easy. If it were simple to stick it in a low priority
thread, I could attach my own controls no problem!
