Hello List,
i am new to this list so forgive if this has been discussed before - a
quick search of the archives didnt reveal anything relevant.
I am trying to build an audio metering device (stereo only for now),
with the purpose of monitoring my video editing system. Right now this
is based on a RPi running Arch Linux ARM. As the window manager i
decided for i3 tiling WM. The RPi has a 7" 800x480 Touchscreen connected
(to be able to reset EBU R128 measuring Keyboard and Mouse-less). As a
soundcard i am using the Behringer U-Control UCA222, connected to a
Samson C-Control as the audio splitter for speaker monitoring etc.
As the software i am playing with the ebumeter, yass & jaaa from Kokkini
Zita (http://kokkinizita.linuxaudio.org/linuxaudio/). I installed the
jackmeterbridge tools as well.
I am still trying to figure out what software will be useful in "real
life" situation, meaning what is the RPi capable of handling CPU wise
(jaaa pushed it to its limits naturally).
- So i wondering, has anyone done something similar before and can share
his / her experiences?
- Are there other software tools that i have missed that would be worth
looking at?
- Especially screen estate is a problem with a 800x480 pixel screen.
Jass fits barely, ebumeter is super small etc. Is there a way to scale
fixed width tools differently to make a nicer screen layout?

thanks for the replies.
Robin: I must admit that i didn't know the RPi is capable of OpenGL. I
have the "old" RPi (B Version) but as far as i googled, it could do
OpenGL as well, so i will try to run LV2.
Fons: i found your jmeters before and obviously it is great that they
have correct response. I must admit though, that i am not a big fan of
the analog meter style (probably i am just not used to it) and i didnt
find the digital style jackmeters have, or is it already there but just
not documented?

Robin: I never quite understood advantage of the loudness radar which
the RTW device also feautres vs. a horizontal way of displaying the
programs loudness... i think something like the ebumeter combined with
yass oscilloscope (with an additional timescale) would be perfect to get
a quick overview of the dynamic range...

"perfect" layout figured out.

Jmeters is all 'old' style, but jkmeter is a 'digital' one.

The circular display lends itself to present a lot of information in a
small area. As with needle meters you can keep the eyes focused on a
small spot. A moving X/Y history or histogram are harder to follow (for
most people anyway) but as usual there's taste and habits.
Still going with Fons' jmeters, jkmeters and ebur128 may prove to be
more efficient on the RPi.

There's also https://github.com/x42/sisco.lv2/ but that's rather
intended for measurements (it behaves like a traditional scope and does
not scroll). In any case both meters.lv2 and sisco.lv2 also come as
standalone jack app (no need to fire up an LV2 host), note however that
the default OPTIMIZATIONS (Makefile) are for Intel platform and not for
RPi/ARM.
On a related subject, some LAUs built a similar device (they may chime
in) and on the way wrote https://github.com/rvega/window-positions in
order to automatically position the various meters on the screen.

A collection of classic analog meters, all with the correct response
and very lightweight.

Jkmeter is what you want for serious audio work. It's based on the
ideas of mastering guru Bob Katz and measures both RMS and peak.
Also very lightweight, just X11, no toolkits, not even cairo.
If you want more control over monitoring have a look at zita-mu1
which includes the kmeter.
