Hi.
Can anyone recommend something to use for granular synthesis? If
possible, maybe a VST which runs on Linux.
And I'm completely new to the topic as well. Any dos and don'ts?

Not a VST, but it might help:

Iaian McCurdy's Csound examples, most if not all come with ready made
GUIs. There are some granular instruments amongst them. You may even
find VSTs built with Cabbage, which is also based on Csound.

Sorry, that might have come over badly. The examples provided by Iain
have the look and feel of standalone synths with all the usual controls.
And, if there were plugins built with Cabbage these would be normal
plugins, which just need Csound in the background.
Hm, I know that Csound may sound frightening, have you tried kvr:

They probably hold the largest collection of free and commercial plugins
of all types. Last time I looked, they even had LV2 plugins. :)

Indeed on Linux using jack is the best.
Although Granita was primarily intended to work on (existing) files, the
buffer (a.k.a. array in Pd) can be fed live through a kind of
'round-robin' looper (see the Vimeo video towards the end for an example).

Csound, SuperCollider, Pure Data, RtCmix, Common Lisp Music are good
places to start.
Study Iain McCurdy's Csound/Cabbage instruments.

just because I didn't see it mentioned elsewhere in this thread or resources linked to
by it, I want to mention Borderlands.
I stumbled over it a while ago and found it quite neat to play with; the current version
is an iPad app it seems, but an older opensource version is available here:

The Readme file has all the docs to get you going. Here i have to run JACK to be able to
use it, otherwise RTAudio cannot find an audio device or so it seems.
