I just installed Fedora 8 and downloaded the Planet CCRMA packages.
When I run qjackctl there is nothing under the midi tab in connect. I
have not connected anything yet but is this a problem? Shouldn't there
be something under the midi tab? Thanks.

The midi tab is for midi in jack, if you are not running any software
built for that then it is normal for this to be empty.
The ALSA tab reflects the status of the ALSA midi sequencer interface...

When you start jackd with the parameter -Xseq you can see all alsa ports
in the jack midi tab (and the alsa tab). There for you can enable the
alsa sequencer support in the setup widget under Misc.

Which actually depends on the backend and is only true with the alsa backend.
When you are using firewire, you have to use a2jmidid to bridge the
alsa-clients to jack-midi...
