Hello list,
I'm running gentoo kernel 2.20-gentoo-r8.
I start jack (0.91.1) with jackd -vR -d alsa ,as root.
muse is working (if started as root)
so is ardour
But when I try Alsaplayer -o jack somefile.someformat,
it says "Failed to load output plugin "jack". Trying defaults."
When I shut down jack alsaplayer starts playing perfectly
Does it have something to do with the asoundrc-science?
I tried copiing the jack-plugin text for .asoundrc somewhere
from the alsa-site, the same result
I thought it should work without the .asoundrc,but maybe I'm wrong.
Anyone knows what I'm missing?

You might have to compile alsaplayer with
'--enable-jack' but I'm not sure that's the case with
a module. It should say something in the alsaplayer
README.

I think you will not see jack as a flag. I had the same problem this morning
for some reason. Check to make sure you have the jack flag in make.conf and
make sure you are using the ~x86 version. For some reason it looked like the
current stable version doesn't use jack, so I went to ~x86 and everything
was fine.

The other new thing is that there is a dependencie with libjackasyn
but libjackasyn-0.8 fails to compile for me
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -pv libjackasyn
gave me version 0.10. (Strange numbering, 'eh?) ;-) That's what I'm using.

I forced alsaplayer to upgrade,without libjackasync,using
emerge withe --nodeps option,but it seems to be allright.
Now even the gtk-interface is coming up:)
Must run it as root though.I'm going to study this problem
setting everything suid root?

jack needs root to get realtime priority and to lock memory.
you can either work as root, or add a small patch to your kernel and use
the jackstart wrapper (which is suid root). then you can run the rest of
the jack clients as normal user.

are doing fine with jackstart.
Muse doesnt like this way.With jackstart it still needs to be root for
starting,but then it crashes.It still works when jack is started the old
way (as root).
The qeustion is who is to blame :me,jack or muse?

At least the last time I try it was not able to compile givertcap.c. I
think it has something to do why Muse wanting to compile it with gcc
instead of g++ (Tommi Ilmonen file is givertcap.C and not givertcap.c as
in Muse). I am not sure it's the only problem .... otherwise it should
be easily fixed.
What is working is the --enable-suid-install option.
