I use a camcorder with a HDMI grabber. The problem with that setup is
that camcorders tend to need extension lenses (and the threads for that)
to go wide angle, and for board games you really want wide angle.
And then the wide angle lens blocks the microphone ports so you want an
external microphone and ...
On the plus side, I can also put a closeup lens on the filter threads.

It is also easy to reliably record in parallel with webcam usage
(different codec from the stream picked off of HDMI).
All in all, probably enough of a hassle to be commendable as a go-to
solution. But maybe an option worth thinking about for tinkerers.

I mean, enough of a hassle to _not_ be commendable as a go-to solution.
But maybe an
option worth thinking about for tinkerers.
Thanks for the suggestion, but that does seem rather overkill for my
needs.

The webcam that worked for me was this: Anivia Full HD Webcam.
It's cheap, but helped me during the pandemic when I was working at home
and needed to do conferences. I've never run it as a soundcard in jack
though.

Not sure what your target budget is for 'mid range' and what your use
case is.
I got a Logitech C270 a while ago, it's USB, 720p and has a microphone
and works out of the box with Linux. It does have a microphone as well.
It's around 25 Euro on Amazon.
I had bought this for work-from-home video calls because I have an
external monitor attached to a laptop and when presenting from that
monitor and using the laptop's webcam I would look awkward looking off
at the external one, so the C270 would go on the monitor (it has a kind
of 'mount').
I hardly ever used the microphone but I _was_ able to use it with JACK
as an input, and it shows as hw:WEBCAM.
Do take into account that the webcam will only provide a mono audio in
so you will need to select a different sound-card for output in jack.
Of course I wouldn't expect to do 'studio' work with it, but the
microphone's quality seemed pretty decent for voice.

Hmm, not sure what "mid range" means, but I have a Logitech QuickCam Pro
9000 that works.

It's pretty old, don't know if it's still available or not. But my
general experience with Logitech is they make great products.

Maybe not the cheapest one but I have used Microsoft LifeCam Studio. Worked
flawlessly. I think I've used it briefly with jack but can't vouch for its
usefulness there. Used it on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and Ubuntu.

You will probably find the rate is very low like 32000 or something which
is _not_ a good start as a jack master. I would prefer running jack either
with some other device that has 48000 (internal or whatever) or dummy, set
to a reasonable rate. then use alsa_in or zita-a2j to import the mic audio

Most of the USB webcams seem to work. Most of the Mics do show up as ALSA
devices. Do look at /proc/asound/card<whatever is your webcam>/stream0 for
a line like:
Rates: 48000, 44100

New subject: Webcam wanted - not any more :)
Just thought I'd let you know I finally got one. A noname one for just under
30ukp. The results are pretty good. It's 1920x1080 resolution, with very
little noise on the image at moderate room lighting. Mic seems reasonably
sensitive, but definitely 'voice' bandwidth.
