whitch app?

My understanding is that Paul Davis uses HDSP, Fedora Core 1, Planet
CCRMA, Ardour/JACK/ALSA to do this. Ron Parker may be running something
similar in his studio but I'm not sure exactly what gear/distro. I know
he's using Ardour though.

Ardour is in a beta stage of development. It changes
all the time so I wouldn't advise you to build
something and expect it to perform everytime you need
it. That's not going to happen until 1.0.
The good news is Paul Davis expects to have 1.0
released very soon. I'm thinking 30ish days.
With every opportunity, I use Ardour. I test Ardour
daily and know what's happening with it at all times.
I'm never suprised by anything and that's exactly how
you need to aproach it.
I keep a Mac running Digital Performer and when doing
jobs that must have perfect technical behaviour I use
it.
The RME hardware is very good. I assume you've got a
hardware console or a fine rack of preamps.
Please do ask any other questions you want. I love
talking about Ardour. :)

I have I project I was working with for several hours and at some stage ardour
refused to replay the song (I seem to have hit some wrong button or
something, I don't know, I'm very new to the linux audio stuff). Okay, I just
thought it freezed or something so I restarted first ardour and then the
whole computer. I can playback other projects or newly created ones. I just
cannot play this specific project.
I'm using ardour 0.9beta11.2-2 on Debian testing and a Midiman Audiophile 2496
soundcard.
Any help appreciated.

you see levels in the channel meters? If yes, check
the routes in Windows | Route Parameter.

for it.

but you've gotta be prepared to deal with bugs. If you
know that, you can avoid some frustration, keep
learning and having fun.

Well I have been running Ardour on Debian for at least 2 yrs. And have
found it very reliable.
I have had crashes similar to yours. Mine were usally caused by a
corrupted routing/config file. But I have NEVER lost any audio data.
Which is the main reason I run Ardour.
Looking at an old session there are 2 files that I would look at.
SessionName.ardour and SessionName.ardour.bak. I have had some luck
with restoring the session by copying the backup file
SessionName.ardour.bak to SessionName.ardour. And when worse come to
worst, I would just import the audio files into a new session. You
could also try "diff SessionName.ardour SessionName.ardour.bak".
And remember Your Mileage May Very ;-)

I've lost audio data inside a snapshot when I had a lock up or crash,
but I make lots of incremental snapshots, so I can always backtrack if I
need to.

A stable release on the horizon is indeed good news. I'd love to see Debian
Sarge go stable including stable versions of ALSA, JACK, Rosegarden and
Ardour, I think it would be kind of neat. It would also provide a solid,
reliable and user-friendly production environment (albeit with no guarantees,
of course ;-). I'm not really expecting to see this manifest before the
autumn. I think it will represent a major milestone in Linux Audio
development, which is good enough for me, I have enough work to do just
remastering some of my old stuff with JAMin and preparing new MIDI files. I
have yet to get deeply into multitracking, so I'll probably shut up at this
point (again, no guarantees ;-).

If I remember correctly I had a problem like that with that release. I
had to go into the session file and remove the crossfade sections. Save
a copy of your session (.ardour) file, edit it and remove the crossfade
sections and see what happens. I haven't had that problem with the
latest stuff.

this is to reiterate something that I said in my reply - my understanding is
that Paul is using something like the multiface or digiface (maybe he'll see
this and answer?) but not the 9652 (actually I don't know of anybody but me
using the 9652 and ardour now that mark knecht moved it to a windoze box) -
and when I was really working on it before we seemed to all come to the
consensus that there was some key differences with the 9652 - subtle but key
oh something I forgot - at least one studio (the big one) at Stanford's
CCRMA when I was there visiting was using a red hat box with the multiface
version of hdsp - Nando didn't give me any indication that they were having
any stability problems - although I started another conversation about that
with him recently, that when we both are slightly less busy we'll probably
talk about, and I'll give it to y'all if there's any relevant we discover or
report to eachother
my general stance on it is that the situation with at least the 9652 and
ardour can't be called stable in professional enviroments - I don't know of
any reports of that card being stable. in fact I'm almost counting on
having to learn a lot and help thomas c. with the driver (and I mean
learning a LOT *laugh*)

I have one - I do 24 tracks routinely - it has yet to be as stable as I want
it though - I've had it running under red hat and under gentoo, using Ardour
under red hat I got it probably 85% stable and then I had a hard drive
failure, moved to gentoo on that box for other reasons, and it took a little
while to get to where it wasn't freezing a lot, which we think is an issue
with the hdsp driver and jack - it still was freezing every so often but I
was working again when I somehow fried my mobo and all my ram ;) *LAUGH*
from what I was reading and with talking to people on here, it seemed like
perhaps the digiface or multiface was a bit more reliable, again we think
that's a slight issue with the driver, there's been quite a bit of hacking
on that but there are very few of us, apparently, using the actual hsdp 9652
under linux, and I, for one, am not nearly good enough at programming at
this point to contribute to developing the drivers
of course, for me the 9652 was necessary because I need the ADAT light pipe
I/O
stay in contact with me, if you would, about this, because I (having no
money to get other cards or windoze software) am pretty committed to getting
a solid system going with the 9652)
my next set of testing and such will be to see how it goes using ecasound -
I don't know ecasound yet so don't quote me, but I think it doesn't need
Jack, and it's also in the 2.somethings, so in general I'm assuming it's
more stable than ardour - (of course ardour's a different way of doing it,
so I'll still be working at having a stable ardour system)
if you'll remind me I'll let you know how the ecasound experiments go - my
new mobo is supposed to be here on the 13th so that's about when I'll start
putting it back together
