Hi all,
I'm sure this has been discussed many times, so sorry for
re-iterating... but I guess new drivers and products come out each day,
so here you go:
I'm looking at external audio cards (for use with my laptop) especially
to do multichannel (balanced!) output
- Obviusly they should work with linux-jack (ubuntu if there are any
issues with this distro)
- at least 8 balanced outputs
I'm looking at
these:http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/FireWire/index.php possibly in
the second-hand market and because they are listed as "full support" on
the ffdao site.
Any other experience advice is very welcome

the subconscious :)
Anyway I may have found a bargain for a Focusrite Saffire PRO 24
http://www.focusrite.com/products/saffire/saffire_pro_24/
Although the ffado site lists support as experimental
(http://www.ffado.org/?q=node/1204) the posts there and other stuff
about the pro 10 which I guess is similar make me optimistic about it
working.
Again it would be nice to hear some current news from someone
successfully using it

bigger brother, the 40, and so far it performs well. But then we're
talking about a quadcore CPU with hyperthreading on a desktop machine.
Don't know how it will perform on a notebook.
When it comes to using it live, don't know, the 'problem' with FireWire
devices and JACK (at least JACK1, don't know about JACK2) is that if you
run into xruns those could take JACK down completely resulting in a mute
machine. I have the feeling this happens less with USB, USB just keeps
going. So for live performances maybe an USB sound card might be a
better option.

that my usb card should work now.

Using an older version of JACK2 (JACKDMP is proper name) here, 1.9.2.
Couldn't get regular JACK to work with my laptop/USB soundcard combo.
I understand one difference between JACK1 and JACKDMP is better support
for multiple processors/cores. Can't tell you if it makes a difference,
I have only single-core processors here.

actually pretty cool for audio. Only better ways of transporting digital audio
are ADAT, AES and the likes...
And jack2 handles xruns (no matter if its xruns of hardware or software) far
eaiser because os its internal structure.

Thanks for the clarifications and feedback.
Now I also have an offer for an echo audiofire 12 bigger and a bit more
expensive but I've heard very good praises for it's audio quality (and
it's got 12 in/outs). And, of course, it's listed "full support" on the
ffado site.
Any opinions? The guy says he's got another offer so I'm kinda in a hurry :)

My church uses Audiofire 12 to record the band during services. It works
very well. Our sound tech's new laptop with Windows 7 doesn't work with
his Firewire card, though, so we haven't recorded for a while.
Apparently the solution is to reinstall Windows, then reinstall the
Firewire drivers.
He and I have made a couple of brief stabs at booting his machine from
various audio-distro live CDs, but haven't been able to get the Firewire
recognized. (Even with a distro recommended by someone on this list who
uses it regularly with an Audiofire 12 because it just works.)
Perhaps his Firewire card has an unsupported chipset, or maybe the
entire card port bus isn't being recognized Don't know, it's an HP.
After I get my regular laptop working again, I plan to try using my
laptop's built-in Firewire.

Pro24 and Pro10 are very different devices.
The Pro24 will work with ffado trunk (not the official releases yet). If it
doesn't work, its more likely the problem of your general firewire setup.
We still recommend using the old firewire stack for productional use, the new
stack is still working on becoming ready (for some dice-based devices like the
pro24, output is not working on the new stack). We recommend a recent kernel
and an up-to-date libraw1394 (kernel 2.6.32 and libraw1394 2.0.5 are the
absolut minimum to use the new stack). Especially the kernel gets better with
each new version.
The gui for the router of the pro24 might be hard to understand at first, a new
one is in the works but not yet finished. All the other features work.
And the preamps are nice.
