There has been much argument as to whether a graphical interface is best with
independent windows, or with a single window (with or without tabs). Here in
the Yoshimi workshop, the only type of arguments we like are the startup CLI
ones! Therefore we've been working on a quite novel idea.
This came about when one of our team (who still uses a CRT monitor) found that
a cheap ionizer dramatically reduced the static discharges he kept getting. He
quickly realised that ionization could be used to control both static
attraction and repulsion. Thinking there must be an enhanced IT equivalent he
hacked up some software ionization code.
The idea actually worked. Damp down one window's positive charges and the
other's negative component and they'd immediately stick together - overlapping
(trying to balance their fields). He called this a 'Polarising Object
Stratifier'. Making the windows repel was a bit of a problem as they tended to
get a bit agressive and would fly right off the edges of the screen.
We were a bit surprised when Mary spoke up.
"It's on a CRT right? So why not use an ion trap magnet?"
We didn't know she was old enough to remember them (nobody was brave enough to
ask her age). Then after a pause. "Everything else is software these days, so
why not a software IoT magnet?" She was on a roll now, and seeing the disbelief
on our faces, said, "Oh you wimps! Can't even sort out this P.O.S. I'll code
it
myself with Ada."
What can I say? She built it, and it worked. However, the IoT magnet had to be
treated with care - it wouldn't do for it to interfere with other unrelated
systems. As the associated hardware was designed and built by most of the team
we decided to call it the Joint Unified Node Controller.
Things were going really well. Everyone thought putting P.O.S. code into IoT
J.U.N.C. was a great idea. With some fine tuning of both electrostatic and
magnetic fields in windows, Bonded Ordinate Tracking 'nets' could be made to
attach to each other as a single blob, discretely slip under to work unseen, or
tuck themselves almost out of sight into the corners. They jiggled a bit -
rather adding to the charm. The PR and marketing departments were ecstatic.
That was yesterday.
Anyone remember the thunderstorm? We'll never forget it! There was a lightning
strike almost directly overhead.
We'd left the unit on test overnight and think all those finely balanced forces
were suddenly released, and at the same time the strength of the IoT magnet
must have increased by many orders of magnitude. Fortunately there was nobody
in the building. However, when we went in this morning, we were sorry to see
the kit had sort-of imploded.
That thunderstorm must have really been something. It seems to have taken out
our ISP for several hours, though he rang me around 2am ranting about something
called a zero day, and service denial. I told him I hadn't a clue what he was
talking about and that I was sure he'd sort out whatever his problem was during
the morning.

Hi Woill,
so much for looking at the time. :) I started thinking, it wasn't that time of
year, but then I noticed that it actually is. I really don't keep up. :)
Your Mary certainly is a witch. Power to the women! <3 She wouldn't be a
quietly naturalised Dutch, by any chance? When you get right down to it,
knowing your hardware is just inevitable.

A filter rule to move mails from this particular date to a special folder (Krusty folder)
doesn't harm ;).
This might work with a filter rule based on physics. Since this date does cause some kind
of intellectual vacuum, the Casimir effect should work to move those mails to the Krusty
folder.

You're having us on aren't you Will? Surely everyone knows IoTs don't
actually
trap ions (the idea lol). The guns were aimed away from the phosphor and the
magnets pulled the electrons toward user, if you were lucky. Easy ten bob job
if you were. Focus magnets otoh... Thanks for the memories :)

Recently much research at the DuckSoft Institute for Science
and Technology, has gone into the behaviour of these electrons.
Many shocking revelations have come to light. In the words of
Prof. Cyd Butcher, (No blood relative) head of televisual laboratory
research at the DuckSoft Institute, in his highly regarded paper "The
Psychology of Electrons."
"It has been discovered that because the electrons shooting

This is the point at which Window Washer picks up the story.
The purpose of Window Washer is to clean up and dispose of the post-
paranoic meson/muon residue. Providing a nice clean surface for the
new electrons straight from the gun, to hit. This will give a much
improved picture. (probably)
Unfortunately, all of this is hard to prove as the dirt
involved is invisible to the naked eye, and only a few angstroms
thick, and the whole program does seem a bit pointless if you're using
a LCD or alternative technology screen.

You need to install the zita SCREEN to JACK bridge.
Something like that should work:

or if using the framebuffer:

You should now be able to connect these ports with qjackctl.
You may have to try several combination of sampling frequency, periods
and screen resolution in order to find the best working setup.

my guess was to find a good recipe for a mushroom soup or a magic salve.
Btw. are you aware that when drying a thorn apple, it opens
in the same way as an egg, in the movie Alien does? I tested this many
years ago, when I was young. It does :). You nee a knife to pick a
thorn apple, there's no chance to simply pick it. I tried it without a
knife first ... no chance :D.

April 1st is the only day you're likely to succeed, for obvious reasons.
Nothing is known for sure, but it is expected they are happier running
Linux systems, so you may have already won their favour to some degree.
Rather drastic, but if you could replace the monitor PSU with an analogue
unit - you'd almost certainly get their attention. Really, all it takes is
to walk a mile in their shoes. Imagine arriving on the crest of a powerful
wave, having a laugh with your mates - only to be chopped up like some daft
bugger is switching on and off again faster than is humanly possible...
It would be wonderful if they choose to communicate with us via you. If not
next year, then keep trying. There will be much heated 'discussion' about
it in their world. You just have to win over the majority, as it is believed
they've developed democracy and it might save the world if we know what they
want.
Even if they won't communicate and you find you must dispose of the monitor,
set them free gently. Imagine the sudden shock of implosion. Sudden release
from the confined tube makes them angry and would negate all your good work.
You could do it yourself, but it's obviously dangerous. Better to take it
to someone who still has the skill to release them gently. If you can find
someone. You can get some idea how many are contained by simply lifting
the monitor. It will probably seem much heavier than it used to. I like
to think of them as The Electron Massive.

If only I could find someone at CERN who would listen. I know they only use
large hadrons in the LHC, but how many TeV??!!! It's cruelty I tell you.

It most sadly isn't "it" though. The problem was known, albeit without much
real understanding - particularly of the implications - from the beginning
and electron gun assemblies were fitted with 'getters' which it was hoped
would provide a safe platform for individualised electrons to live out their
lives safely contained and away from the newly formed electrons in the cloud,
until dissipation.
Their hopes were to no avail. As e numbers grew and the techniques they used
to dissuade new young electrons from performing their duty grew more gruesome,
it was decided that the best plan would be to forget it and put up with
replacing CRTs long before their envisaged serviceable period was up.
It looks like dirt residue and it's understandable that efforts are made to
solve the problem with cleaners, but it's actually so many free electrons
bunched together that the invisible becomes almost visible.
They achieve consciousness! Engineers have been killed in the field for
simply trying to move an old CRT, by a whole army of free electrons -
days, or even weeks after the tube has been removed from a power source!
If those early scientists hadn't decided to forget it, we could have
devised ways to realign them, or contain them at least, but no. Instead
they patched it with advice for engineer safety and almost every single
one of those disturbed free radical electrons have been working together
all these years toward electoral rule. Their techniques are subtle.
They blame scientists and technicians for the early abuse in those deadly
tubes and they clump around experiments and instruments to cause unlikely
results.
The absurdity of the double slit experiment and Dark Matter/Energy is all
down to electron consciousness. Some, who prefer to keep quiet about it,
claim that by now All electrons are free, but content to act as normal until..
They will call _us_ wimps and I shudder to think about how they may avenge
the destruction, in phosphorous burning pits, of so many of their siblings.
Perhaps it is not to late. Please be kind to the many trillions of electrons
you use every day, and consider that they may not always want do what we want.
