Hi,
I like to speed up my boottime of my Mac Mini / Instrument module. I'm
thinking about buying a SSD drive.
How are SSD drives performing these days and how reliable are they? What
about a SSDH drive?

I've been using a Kingston SSD as the OS drive, since I purchased it in
July 2010. There have not been any problems to date.

I've been using a Kingston SSD as the OS drive, since I purchased it
in July 2010. There have not been any problems to date.

I second rob and Patrick. My Kingston SSD is running the system and
working fast and seamlessly. I do however store my /home on a separate
"traditional" HDD.
As for SSDH, first time i read the acronym. Guess i have to webcrawl a
little about that today :)

Assumed you like to use gvfs or the KDE equivalent that e.g. gets
started, if you launch K3b, then consider not to get a green drive that
fits to the EU Regulation for external drives, or at least don't forget
to unplug the drive as soon as the backup is done. I own a 2 TB WD
Elements and after 30 minutes it automatically spins down, but when I
had gvfs installed, then it immediately spins up again, the same
happens after usage of K3b. Frequently spins down and up shorten the
lifespan. Fortunately I don't use gvfs and I also think it's wise to
disconnect a backup device, when it isn't needed. I guess it's worth to
mention this issue. It's said that some drives even spin down and up
again and again within a few seconds, instead of 30 minutes, as my
drive does. JFTR if you don't want to use gvfs or similar and you don't
want to mount manually (I use scripts to manually mount by label),
there is software than can mount without helpers such as gvfs, e.g.
rodent.

New Macbook pro's are delivered with SSD afaik, so I guess it's pretty
safe to use.
SSD is nice, but what if I just put the Mac Mini in sleepmode the whole
night or for a few days? Any disadvantages?

Seriously Fuck Apple Hard Sideways!! I don't understand how people who
can agree with the philosophies behind FLOSS can also support the least
ethical technology (and most profitable) company in the world! Yes
almost everybody uses Foxconn these days but not everybody defended the
installation of suicide nets as a sufficient way to "improve
conditions." And nobody else has as bad tax avoidance record.
I met a guy recently who spent a year working in Shenzhen (where the
main Foxconn factory which does most of Apple's work is located) and he
told me how on days off they used to go around the industrial areas,
freely walk into electronics factories and be approached by a
foreman/manager who would subsequently give them a tour around the whole
facility. Try and get any where near the Foxconn facilities (which are
pretty much a city in themselves) and you are faced with miles of
barbed-wired fences and gun-carrying jeeps keeping you outside!!

Put simply: better safe than sorry.
A choice i mafde after reading a lot about corrupt SSD. But frankly
speaking, i have no idea how accurate this is today.
