Can anyone suggest such a program suitable for adjusting (while replaying) a
pre-recorded vocal track? I used to use jamin, but that doesn't seem to run
with current gtk versions. Must run with Jack.

Depends a bit on how "graphical" you want the EQ to be. Do you just want
to see its frequency response? Then perhaps use Reaper and its ReaEQ
plugin. Or use http://x42-plugins.com/x42/ which has an EQ plugin. Fons
Adrieansen had an EQ program as well but I can't find it on
https://kokkinizita.linuxaudio.org/linuxaudio/ right now.

That would be zita-eq1. It's on the download page now.
This is not 'graphical' in any way, but IMHO parametric EQ
does a much better job for typical track EQ. I wrote this
more than 15 years ago but it was never released.
From the README:
* Up to 64 channels (use -k).
* 3rd order highpass, 10...320 Hz.
* LF shelf section.
* 3 parametric sections.
* HF shelf section.
* Bypass and makeup gain.
* Fully de-clicked and de-zippered.
The shelf sections have a variable slope. When this is set above
2/3 of the range, the gain will first go in the opposite direction
before going up or down to the set gain. This was a feature of some
of the most famous analog equalisers.

Not in this release. I wanted for a long time to create a common
preset/memory system for all the zita-* stuff, but that never
happened. See the small rectangle just below the zita logo ?
This is where the button opening the presets dialog will go...

IIR correctly, the EQ in some of the big SSL consoles had this.

Some probably were. But in those times, no sound engineer worth
his title needed a graphical display of the EQ response. We just
*listened* ...

Thanks for the extra info! I wonder if this peak was/is perceived as
pleasant, or if it helps finding the cutoff frequency. Possiby noone has
published anything about this.

Wanted to second this. Why not use Carla and load in your favorite eq
vst/clap/lv2/ladspa/etc? From there, you can save presets if needed, and
even load up more plugins if necessary. I use Carla in this way all of
the time for quick loading of dsp.

LSP plugins have a standalone JACK version as well as the usual LV2,
VST3, CLAP etc. I use the 8 band parametric as DRC, starts with JACK
using startup command in Qjackctl. Can save presets and adjust in real time.
If using Pipewire instead of JACK, it has an EQ module built in. I
recall seeing a GUI utility on LM forum to adjust it. Found it -

And as mentioned above, parametric is usually a better choice for EQ
than graphic. They have finer control to get the right EQ curve, and
reportedly can have less phase issues.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. This one is just about a perfect fit for
me.
As a matter of interest what I'm using it for is post processing a recording of
me (attempting) singing in a room with a distinct resonance, and with a mic
that has a poor HF response.
This is for this month's KVR music cafe contest.
