Hello Everyone!
It's perhaps a bit off topic. But how to best go about creating a Theremin
sound? I mean, I've tried, but with very mixed results. I'm still not sure
about the basic waveform to choose. Should it be sine or highly
smoothed/filtered sawtooth? The vibrating aspect of the sound: Go for vibrato
or tremolo or both? What do you say?

There is an example of a Theremin sound in the Supercollider tutorial

Isn't it more about the controls?
How do you drive it? Mouse?
I wrote oa a few years ago to experiment
with hose things, but it's a X11 program,
so I doubt it would be useful for you...

I'll use one of my hardware synths. Yes the controls are one thing, but the
basic sound has to be right. I think Leigh has given me some good points to
get there.

I'd try a sine wave, with vibrato (ie; an LFO modulating the pitch), and
a significant portamento time -- that, with maybe some manual pitch
bend, should hopefully get you close enough. Having the mod wheel set up
to modulate the amount of vibrato could be useful, too -- I *think* Calf
Monosynth from git will allow you to do all of that.
As for the sound itself, the plain sine wave may sound a bit weak, but
some very subtle distortion (from something like TAP Tubewarmth) should
help.

That sounds good. I'll do that in hardware though. I think the calf
Monosynth will be LV2 or DSSI, which are both not too good with a CLI, unless
they offer their own text-based UI> Still, these are very valuable tips.

That's what gives it the sound it has. You should test it with some kind of analogue
controller or at least an xy on-screen control surface as that will give you the best feel

Thanks for the more detailed explanation. But I'm afraid, I wasn't very
clear in my basic requirements. I already have something to satisfy my needs
now. But the sound was for a complete song, as one instrument among many
others. What I wanted to capture was the main idea of a Theremin sound. With
that I succeeded. Unfortunately the poor sound will have only a role in the
background, yet a carrying one at least. :-(
It's good to know these things anyway, since you never know, when and where
you need such a sound again.

My admitedly very humble
guess would be both. as others have said, a
two-dimentional controller would be best, but otherwise, I suppose you'd
want to introduce some kind of randomness in the modulation to try and
achieve a more natural sound.
