I have some limited experience playing other keyboards/E-Pianos than my own old
Roland JX-305, which is a 61-semi weighted keys synth which specialised in
'Dance, R&B, Techno' etc kind of sounds. It was the keyboard version of the
MC-505 Groovebox in fact. Initially, I started off as a guitarist and just
wanted to have a keyboard/synth to play some accompaniments to my guitar

I have tried/played some diff. keyboards/controllers, like i.e. the M-Audio
Keystation Pro 88 (favoring a controller/softsynth approach), some of the better
Roland/Yamaha Stagepianos, the Yamaha CP-series and then some...
I personally most often preferred the Roland keys in the lower pricerange, the
Yamaha keys win in the upper pricerange IMHO. The CP series i.e. are all high
quality, keys and soundwise. But then these are all outta your pricerange I
guess, unless you'll find some 2nd hand top offer.
I think you speak some right words.. Have you
experience with playing

Polyphony is the max playable number of notes that can be played at any one
time. So, if you're playing a simple C chord, you'll use up 3 voices of
polyphony (C - E - G). But if now you keep them ringing with the sustain pedal
to play some single notes over your chord, you stack up the voices.
Since Piano/E-Piano playing very much involves your sustain pedal, it quickly
builds up to way more then 32 voices.
Where do you use polyphony for? Does 64-voices of
polyphony also mean
that the keyboard has 64 keys?
Good luck in your search. It may be worth checking local garage sales, flea
markets and the 'for sale' columns of your local newspaper/hebdomadal magazines.

A pure-midi keyboard doesn't sound. Except for the "klack" of the keys going
down. :-)
For the audio-part (done by the synths) it is unimportant wether the
midi-signal is coming from a virtual keyboard in the pc, a real keyboard
(wether or not that has an own sound generator) or a sequencer application...
Only with a midi keyboard you have more control over the volume of the signal
if the soundfont uses the velocity to modulate the volume of the sample. So
you might start playing softer to not overload your audio. But that is in
fact the wrong cure for the symptoms. As Fons pointed out the volume of the
synth or the soundcard is to high. Better fix that...

Depending on which instrument (genre) you want to focus. If you're longing for
keys mainly (Piano, E-Piano, Rhode, Wurli a B3 maybe), and synth secondly, I
think I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this M-Audio KB. It has 88 keys (which I
wish mine would have :( ), I guess the 'touch' would be half-decent at last. The
'Pro-88' has quite good keys IMHO. But be sure you get a second series model.
The first had some problems physical with the keyboard/keys.
If you'd be more interested in synth stuff, the Radium/Oxygen KB could be a
better choice, as they give you extended functionality for tweaking, automation
writing 'n stuff. I extended my synth with a Behringer BCR2000, which is a
really cool controller. Also use it for QSynth, Freewheeling, Ardour and other
instruments/FX/editors under 64 Studio (32-bit).
Anyway, with Thomann I never had the slightest problem. You can send back the
stuff you don't like within 2 weeks at last.

Yamaha does wonders in this area..DGX620. Weighted 88 keys, fun to play; a
piano with effects but uhh..not a piano. On the higher side of the dollar
scale is the P series, though the P-140 is quite a jump from P70 which may
be around the cost of the DGX..arghhh I can't remember really. What I can
remember is that P-140's sound is superb, I mean you can actually play and
tell that what you're playing on is something of quality - like you know
it's good wine, the real deal, the shiat. Look - I am no pianist. If I could
tell the difference, it really means something.
So looking at Yamaha's offerings, I'd pick the DGX because it's the most
versatile of the lot (well, weighted is about the only feature of a piano it
has). You get quality from the Ps, but not the functions of a keyboard
(dunno about the 70 but 140 does have MIDI out). Well, good luck.

I've long wanted to get a yamaha cp300. Of all those I've played it
feels really, really good to me and sounds great. But, it was more than
I wanted to spend so I settled for the casio px-310 (now replaced by
px-320). The casio feels pretty good for the price compared to other
stuff in that price range. The sound is also pretty good. But, having
played and heard something better (the cp300) I'm always a little
disappointed when I sit down in front of it.

When starting to learn Piano some time ago I ended up buying a M-Audio
Prokeys 88 when it first came out. I personally think it was a great buy,
and they now have the SX series which is even less money. The keys are
hammer weighted and feel very good to me, though I am not really all that
much of a pianist myself. It has some decent sounds on board, and basic
effects(Reverb, Chorus, etc.) with midi input and output. Only catch is no
onboard amp, but that isn't really a problem for me as I run it through my
monitors anyways. At any rate, I would suggest giving it a try if you only
have so much to spend.

The prokeys, according to specs, has better keys than the prokeys sx.
I wonder how the keys of the prokeys sono is, it lacks quite some
sounds and features but is about as expensive as the sx.

like it... But maybe someone has that device and can give a better review...
Did you try a Fatar, they have good keys. Maybe a Alesis Qs8?

It's possible to get three pedals for the Casio
and the Yamaha, for The
Korg there's only the sustain pedal.
My question is:
When and for what will I need the other pedals?
I'm not sure if this is true of electric pianos, but acoustic grands usually
have the following pedals: left = sustain, middle = sustain for specific
notes (more on that below), right = una corda. The middle pedal sustains
whatever notes are depressed at the time that the pedal is depressed. So if
at a particular time you have the notes A and E pressed down, and you
depress the middle pedal, the A and E will continue to sound until you
release the pedal, while all other subsequent notes will sound normally (ie,
without sustain). This is useful if you have a long held note and other
stuff going on simultaneously, which would make physically holding the note
down difficult or impossible. Unfortunately, in practice, it's often tricky
to "catch" only the desired note(s) - I don't tend to use it much myself.
The una corda pedal works by physically shifting the keyboard and hammers
slightly to the right. If you've looked in a piano, all but the lowest bass
notes actually consist of two or three strings struck at once. The una corda
("one string") pedal moves the hammers so that they strike one fewer string
than usual. This produces a quieter and fuzzier/more diffuse tone. To
understand why it's fuzzier, realize that in normal playing position, the
felt on the hammers is compacted into grooves where the hammers strike the
strings. While using una corda, the normally unused (and hence not
compacted) part of the felt hits the strings, yielding the tone quality I
described. This pedal is useful for color changes, and when you're trying to
play very softly.
So that what the other two pedals do on a "real" piano. I don't know for
sure, but I'd guess that an electric piano would try to simulate these
functions.
I'm just
starting to learn piano but I plan to play a bit unusual music as well
(Schoenberg, etc.).

e-pianos in a local
shop. From those tried in the price range, the yamaha p85 appears
to have the nicest keys and sound. It just doesn't have much else
and is rather expensive (I can get it for 640 Euro new).
You might want to look at
S90ES (I have a S90) which has similar nice
keys and sound with many more features. It seemed a better value to
me than the P90 that I initially got. Yamaha has portable stage
piano as well, but I do not recall the model number.
The M-Audio prokeys 88 is a bit cheaper and has
some more keyboard
functionality, but I also don't know how good the keys are in
comparison.
I did not like the keys on the M-Audio at all. You may want to check
out Roland and Kurzweil as well if you can.

reliable and solid.

I found another option, Yamaha DGX-630.
It advertised more as a home/school piano/keyboard but it looks rather
good to me. I compared it to the Korg SP-250 today and it's hard for
me to say key and sound-wise what's better, but the yamaha has quite a
lot more options and plays in the same price range.
BUT: It has midi only over usb, so I'm kinda worried that it might need
drivers or something.

I could borrow a laptop today, went to the store, booted a
pure:dyne live-CD ("miso") and tested the midi of the DGX-630, aaaand
it works :)
I just did a very basic test. By connecting to zynaddsubfx using
qjackctl and hitting the keys it produced sound.
So yeah, I decided to order that device and got a better deal than
I would have by ordering from thomann.
I guess adding the device to the alsa and the other usb-device site
would be a sensible step to do now?

This is what the manual says:

I've tested the keyboard and I am not able to use zone 2. I can manage the
others to work....
What can be the faillure here? The hardware which fails... maybe my settings
are not right? >> Suggestions, options??!

I've tested the keyboard and I am not able to use zone 2.
Zone 2 is working....
The keyboard has made a smash in transport.. so there is a little hole now
in it... it does not effect the keys however...
But there is also a electronic cable which is broken at the end... but I
don't know what it is. Are there some engineers here who can tell?

Almost the same happened with mine.
The round white things is not an electrical component at all,
it's just part of the way the two side panels are attached to
the top metal plate. This construction is used to avoid having
screws visible on the outside. The wire is just the ground
connection of the case.
As you can see the white plastic part is broken, so the top
plate will now not be supported fully and may end up too close
to the keys.
IIRC there are four of these, two at each side, one front one
back. I removed both of the front ones (one of them was broken,
as yours), and replaced them with two screws that are visible
from the outside, but provide a much more solid solution.
I found black screws with a rather small amd rounded top,
so it still looks good. If you don't know, you'd say this
was the original construction.

It may not even be a cable, just a piece of wire to
avoid the top part falling back when it is opened.
If you have not already discovered this: at the bottom
of the two side panels there are two deep holes. Using
a long cross screwdriver you can remove the four screws
hiding in them. Then the top part of the keyboard can
be opened from the front.
