i got my new Audiophile 2496 installed with Alsa 0.9.0rc5. i have an external A/D
converter and the SPDIF light is lit, meaning that the card is working.
alsamixer shows *lots* of controls. What do they all do?
Can someone post a working /etc/asound.state?

FYI, i tried alsa 0.9.0rc6 and "alsactl restore" hangs my machine. rc5
seems to work OK though.

They are that much, because alsamixer shows all input and output ports
of the *chipset*, not the real card. Most controls aren't effective on
an Audiophile.
I can recommend envy24control from alsa-tools, I think. You somehow
need this tool to work with ICE1720-cards like the Audiophile.

The confusion here is that alsamixer won't work with the Audiophile, you
need to use a program in the alsa utils called "envy24control".

I have had good luck with the AP 2496. I'm not using the spdif.
I use envy24control to get the card into working configuration, and
then alsactl {store,restore} keeps me from fiddling with it much.
Jack does a good job with this card.

Keep in mind with the envy chipset that the audio format is much wider
(channel-wise) than what your HW configuration may be. It is 24 in 32
interleaved with 12 channels out and 10 in (I think). So your best bet
with aplay and arecord is to use an alsa plugin.

i followed the advice on Planet CCRMA.
i can monitor the SPDIF In. It works about 80% of the time. The
other 20% is silence and clicks. This result is in single user
mode on console. i have the card alone on IRQ 9 and nothing
else is sharing IRQ 9 (see attached lspci & dmesg output).
