So far I like the IDEA of it but this brings up a question - can it be
installed without being connected to the network?
I only have a wireless card, and thusfar I haven't been able to get Ubuntu
Studio to install - it doesn't deal with the card properly in the install
sequence, and thus, since it's not connected, can't install anything.
But before that problem I was really excited about it...

Yep I was really excited too. But after testing, I was very disappointed.
Ubuntu studio is just a ubuntu feisty with some... package more. Is it
really necessary to install ubuntu studio more than Ubuntu feisty ?
By default, in the repositories, there is no real time Kernel, and many
softwares, libraries are deprecated...
we can ask : where are the maintainers ? Is it just a beautiful graphical
interface ?
Yes it is just MY opinion, but I am very disapointed.
However, for somone who wants to begin, it is very easy to install, and we
can find all the tools, software necessary to produce some music (depend on
what you want to do and how you want it)

I've been a huge fan of Planet CCRMA's distro for a while now, a really nice
set of audio packages and a real-time kernel, simple to install and well-
documented.

1. Ubuntu studio can be installed without network connection from dvd,
I've done so on 2 different machines without trouble.
2. Ubuntu Studio was just a few different packages different than
feisty + a few which aren't in feisty. The upcoming gutsy release will
be gutsy packages only, including realtime kernel, without a separate
repo.
I don't know what you mean by deprecated libraries and stuff,
everything except I think 2-3 apps is the same as in feisty, so if
anything 'deprecated' is there it is in feisty.
Sure, some stuff could have been better, but I'm glad that it worked as
well as it did.

I switchs to Ubuntu Studio a bit ago from aSlackware monstrosity I put
together... and demudi before that... and XP SONAR 2.2XL before that. The
delay with the repositories hasn't bothered me much.
Personally, I don't need the latest and greatest... I need a computer that
will record audio tomorrow... anything beyond that is a bonus. Sure, if I
ran into a bug I would probably take the effort to upgrade from SVN
however... if it's in the hours just before the session I'm not going to
change anything. :)
Most home studios I know are centered around stability... or at least a fear
of change. :) I run a website catering to customers of a defunct sound card
manufacturer (Aardvark Audio) and I still got people running Win98 because
they got it working and it does what they want it to...
With the repositories, I don't have to fear the upgrades. :)

I'm not. I use Ubuntu 7.04 (you can call it Feisty Fawn or Ubuntu
Studio). I use Alessio's realtime kernel and added few repo's more:

if I need something really new, I don't install Ubuntu Studio ... I don't
want to pass my time compiling, and searching last sources from my best
software.

Sometime, last versions can offer some new stuff that you need. For exemple,
in Jackrack Ubuntu's version, the midi learn, is not implemented. Very
annoying, when you play in real time.
Ok I understand you want a stable system, but you have the choice to upgrade
or not your software.

I can't say that I've truly tried Ubuntu Studio, as I already have
Feisty installed and I knew that it wasn't much of a change; I have
installed the UbuntuStudio packages, though. I'm using a third party
repo to install the kernel with RT patches.
I think it (UbuntuStudio) is a step forward in the right direction.
For one, it's pushing for better real-time support, and more
importantly, it's helping push more audio related applications into
the repos. The key here is that (hopefully many) more people will be
using the software. From what I hear, it's not the best audio-focused
distro out of the box, but Ubuntu is already a very popular and usable
distro; the linux audio world is a vast encyclopedia that takes a
while to digest, and UbuntuStudio is a great way to put working audio
apps immediately at new users' fingertips.
I hope they continue improving Ubuntu Studio and Ubuntu as a whole,
because in the end the whole linux audio world benefits; we need more
users!
