So far (surprisingly (to me)) audacity seems like the best bet, I'm
still to try it out, though.
Not sure anyone here ever tried the noise removal in Sound Forge, but
it's magic. I'm pretty ok with EQ, but that was something else.

Audacity has been good enough for my (limited) needed. However, over on the SOS
forum, the recommended procedure is to use several different noise reduction
programs, and use each to just tweak it down a bit.
