Anyone knows a good spectrum analyser? Preferably as an XMMS plugin, but
a JACK-aware thing is also acceptable.
I kinda like the default spectrum analyser that's displayed all the time
on XMMS' main window, with two exceptions:
- it's too small
- the frequency scale seems to be linear, not logaritmic
If it was bigger (much bigger) and if the frequency scale would have
been in an exponential progression (so that the octave width is
constant), that would be a great analyser.
There are some GL analysers packed with XMMS as plugins, but those are
mere eye-candy, i can't use them to actually get any useful information.

You can lower the update frequency of the spectrum or disable it. That
might help a bit but there's a lot going on here. Use the -s option on
the command line. Range is 1-10 with 10 the default and 0 disabled.
You can also set it through the GUI under the options menu.

Its the EQ + xover processing thats taking all the CPU. I've had a lot of
requests for just the spectrum analyser part of JAMin without the
processing though - so maybe that could be seperated. It would be about
1/8th of the CPU load.
It would also be possible to add an option for time-domain processing of
the EQ and xover, whihc is a lot cheaper, but it would hcange the
behaviour and the HDEQ wouldn't work, which is one of the best features of
JAMin IMHO.
A jamin-users list sounds OK - do you want to set one up? You should have
enough privs on the sf.net system.

this as a negative comment about the program but rather just a comment
on how much of it I'm likely to use.

Thats why theres paramtric like peak controls in Jan HDEQ - you you can
just grab peaks and slide them about if you dont want that much control.

Yes, that I know, and that's actually what I've done the couple of times
I've used it. I'm probably pressing my personal biases here a bit, but I
personally think that a really great tool in the mastering step should
lean toward simplistic and not be a Swiss Army Knife, but that's
certainly just my preference. If I'm working at this step and feel the
need to make big changes, I think that's just an indication that my mix
isn't real solid and I should go back and fix it there.
On the other hand, if we were to imagine huge amounts of processing
power in the near future, then I would jump at the chance of using JAMin
as a channel strip plugin on each channel of my mix. Except in special
cases I'd probably bypass the compressor on most channels, but would
likely keep the limiter, gain control and EQ as they are and make good
use of them.
Anyway, JAMin is a great accomplishment and I personally think it will
end up being used by many people.

you're mastering you shouldn't really be doing anything else that
requires a lot of CPU power. I normally run Ardour->JAMin->Ardour when
I master and I get about 45% CPU usage on my Athlon 1700+.

Yes, I have used it, and it's very nice. It feels *good*, you know, when
I'm listening and changing things a bit.
I guess my thought was that, assuming I understand the architecture of
the program, it's acting as a visual front end to the 32 channel EQ. If
there were simply fewer channels in the EQ then wouldn't thee be lower
CPU usage?

the EQ actually has 1000 bands, the 31 band UI is just there for
completeness (and incase we have any blind users), its another interface
to the 1000 real bands.

Actually it's acting as the front-end to the 1023 band EQ. The curve is
splined to 1023 separate frequency bands. The same thing happens with
the 31 band EQ it's just that you don't have the same amount of control.
With the HDEQ you can cut or boost *very* narrow bands. I have a
recording of a band I was sitting in with in Ft Lauderdale a few years
back. When we recorded there was a very narrow band of feedback that
would show up occasionally. I used the HDEQ to cut just that
frequency. I couldn't have done that with the 31 band EQ and, since it
was just a live stereo recording there was no mixing going on. One of
the nice things about using Ardour/JACK/JAMin is that you can hook up
Ardour->JAMin->Ardour and run tests while tweaking both the mixing and
mastering.

The Waves sight is frames based so I cannot give you a direct URL, but
go to http://www.waves.com , choose Products on the left, then in the
pulldown that says 'Jump to a specific plugin' choose 'Renaissance
Channel' and take a look at these features for a pretty good channel
strip. These features plus the EQ being discussed here would make a very
good combination of things to have in a single plug.
Take a look at the Masters Bundle for a good set of final press plugins.

That's the crossover that splits the audio for the 3 compressors,
correct? I think that probably can go in a Channel Strip application
since it's usually just a single band compressor. In the case fo the
Waves Channel Strip I pointed out earlier it supports a number of
different configurations, but the main two path choices look like this:
input->EQ->Compressor->Gate->Gain
or
input->Compressor->EQ->Gate->Gain
and then side chain control for both the compressor and the gate
separately coming for selectable places inside the plugin with filters
to control what gets into the actual side chain signal.
The only real advantage of a Channel Strip is that everything you need
is there in a single screen. You don't have to call up 3-4 different
plugins to look at the things you want to work on. It also allows side
chain control in ways that aren't very easy using separate plugins.
Anyway, I don't know if this 1023 band EQ, as part of a channel strip or
even by itself, makes sense as a plugin. It was just a comment that
seems to have gained far more air time than I ever intended.

Yep. The only reason its done that way internally in JAMin is because
thats the easiest way to get linear-phase - in an input channel a it of
phase shifting matters far less.

Very true. I think linear phase in the mastering step is worth the
effort since you really want to change the sound at that point as little
as possible.

I haven't read all of this thread but if you're
talking about designing a LADSPA plugin from JAMin
components, there's probably no need for the
crossover. If there's no technical reason for
including it, I'd consider leaving it out.
Assuming I know what's being discussed, I would
suggest a plugin processing chain that doesn't have a
visual/graphic spectrum analyzer. I say that because
if the tool is useful, it'll get used in every channel
strip and the computational expense might add up in a
hurry--just guessing.

I don't find spectrum analyzers to be useful. I
suspect the real issue is learning to hear. I'm
wondering if visuals are a distraction from listening
and seductive to implement because learning to hear is
not easy.
Is the spectrum analyzer the thing in HDEQ that shows
equalization response in realtime? I like Jan's
parametric style controls in the HDEQ but I'd be
perfectly happy if the realtime response stuff was
pulled out.
For two reasons, I've recently begun using the other
EQ ; I don't like the visual distraction and sometimes
the controls of HDEQ get a little sticky. I think Jan
stated that the granularity of the HDEQ for controling
the 1024 bands is greater so I'll go back to using it.

I never use limiting in channel strips during prints
or mixing. I'm not sure why but I don't. I use lots of
compression during prints and mixing.
The gain stages of the compressor might be all that's
needed in a plugin. I'd drop the Boost. Perhaps if
it's several plugins then the input and master output
are interesting. That seems right.
Is capturing files and burning CDs also being
discussed? Then DAO is all that's needed. Being able
to fill the text fields is pretty interesting. Text
fields include; producer, artist, date, titles, etc.
They are useful with cddb and promotion of the
product.
I think Steve eluded to the difficulty of mastering
more than one multitrack source in a session. At one
time I thought the Ardour Chunks could accomplish this
task. I'm not so sure anymore. Many Chunks from
distinct sessions could be "imported" to a mastering
session. But then how to adjust settings in specific
kick drums of different songs...It seems like a mess
and alot of work. I doubt the capability would climb
the Ardour roadmap ladder but if it was possible, it
would rule.
Anyway, I just quickly read part of this thread and
those are a few quick thoughts. Gotta run, sorry my
responsed aren't thought out better.
BTW, seeing the JAMin module bypasses is great. They
are seriously useful.

That's the crossover that splits the audio for the 3
compressors,
correct? I think that probably can go in a Channel
Strip application
since it's usually just a single band compressor. In
the case fo the
Waves Channel Strip I pointed out earlier it
supports a number of
different configurations, but the main two path
choices look like this:
input->EQ->Compressor->Gate->Gain
or
input->Compressor->EQ->Gate->Gain
and then side chain control for both the compressor
and the gate
separately coming for selectable places inside the
plugin with filters
to control what gets into the actual side chain
signal.
The only real advantage of a Channel Strip is that
everything you need
is there in a single screen. You don't have to call
up 3-4 different
plugins to look at the things you want to work on.
It also allows side
chain control in ways that aren't very easy using
separate plugins.
Anyway, I don't know if this 1023 band EQ, as part
of a channel strip or
even by itself, makes sense as a plugin. It was just
a comment that
seems to have gained far more air time than I ever
intended.

strip and the computational expense might add up in a
hurry--just guessing.

As for fields, let's not forget ISRC codes, for automated royalty
accounting. I gather many radio stations rely on this now, so it's
got to be a 'must-have' feature for a professional musician.

Yes. You can now turn off the spectrum display by setting the spectrum
update to 0. Command line or Options menu.

Sorry, forgot this bit. Yeah, its probably about time for a new tarball,
the new solo/bypass stuff is a good addition. I'm not really sure where
the other bypass buttons should go. Possibly one below riht of the HDEQ
pane - level with the "Post EQ spectrum" text, the limiter could have a
bypass button in its section. It doesnt really make sense to bypass the
xover.
