Greetings,
I looked up some information regarding HDMI. The new notebook has an
HDMI port, I wondered if anyone here has any experience using such a port.

Using it here but not under Linux. Clearer video when gaming at
1600x1200. Requires he right port on your monitor which I suspect you
have on your new one.
Folks on the Gentoo lists have talked about it a bit. I suspect it's
mostly a hardware issue that is recognized by the graphics adapter
when you attach the right cable but that's just a guess. It was a
non-issue under windows. Just changed cables and the system acted like
nothing had changed except the picture was a bit better.

Forget everything I just said. It's DVI on the monitors and HDMI on
TVs. We're using DVI here.

It doesn't matter. Electrically they are the same. It's the same wires
and same signals, just in differently shaped connectors. That's why the
DVI-to-HDMI "converters" are really just plastic boxes with a bunch of
criss-crossing wires. So if it works with DVI, it's got to work fine
with HDMI too.
The only difference is that HDMI has additional wires to carry sound,
along with image.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't know that.
So with a DVI output I can get a DVI-HDMI cable converter and get the
video to the TV. I then send the audio over spdif or something that's
accepted by the receiver?

That's exactly what I do, since I use a separate amplifier for sound.
The sound on the TV is poor as usual, so I just skip it and use a
different amp and speakers (really, just a cheap "home theater" system,
but it's better anyway than the TV).

Thanks for the info. Helpful.
I guess in Dave's case the next step would be to know what, if
anything, he wanted to use this port for but it sounds like he could
get an HDMI-DVI converter and drive his new monitor digitally, or he
could drive his home theater using Windows or possibly Linux with
certain media types.

I'm using it for a MythTV frontend, connected to a 58" plasma TV. It
just works, I didn't have to do anything special. First I had a
motherboard with an embedded GeForce 8200 and native HDMI output
(electrically, it's identical to DVI, just in a different connector),
then I put in a GeForce 9600 GT card with a DVI-to-HDMI converter
because the embedded 8200 was too slow for recent 3D games on Windows.
The system, being just a frontend, is dual boot - Mythbuntu and Windows
XP (for games). HDMI Simply Works (TM) on both graphics chipsets that I
tried and on both OSs. I use NVidia's official drivers on both OSs;
however, HDMI starts working from the moment the box is powered up - I
see the BIOS POST, the GRUB menu and all that.
The default resolution for the Linux desktop and for Windows is
1920x1080@60 (a.k.a. 1080p - the native resolution of the TV). Some
Windows games will generate other resolutions, and they usually work
just fine, although the clarity is slightly degraded (keep in mind I am
*very* picky when it comes to image quality - most people would say the
image is just fine).
It looks like the chip will probe the monitor and choose the available
resolutions when it boots up. My screen being a TV, I guess the list
will automatically include 1080p, 720p (1280x720@60) and so on.
2D performance is awesome on any chipset. For 3D, the 8200 was OK for
simple games, but it got massacred by more complex apps on Windows.
Just install the NVidia binary (closed) drivers and use the
nvidia-settings utility to tweak the outputs and settings and stuff, if
something doesn't work the way you want.
The MythTV community knows a lot about HDMI and Linux. See their wiki
and the users mailing list.

pretty much the same as DVI, means digital picture, I'm using DVI to
HDMI dongle to connect computer (DVI) to TV (HDMI)... HDMI is mostly
used on TVs so you want it if you want to connect notebook to TVs. Big
TVs make for pretty good monitors (using 52 inch lcd with my gaming
computer, amazing)
