To me that means, that GNOME 3 is not perfect(though perfectly usable)
since I want to keep everything about the 10-15 windows in my sessions
under MY control. I want virtual desktops for Ardours editor and
Ardours mixer and others for Qtractor, Guitarix, Hydrogen you name it.
And I want to be the one who decides what window is on what desktop
and when and how do I switch to another. Usually I have 6 Desktops
involved in audio sessions plus others for Mozilla etc.
If session handles should be able to handle the windows size, the
windows positions and the work space where windows should appear, than
I'll use a session handler too.
Try XFCE
I switched to Xfce
or KDE
KDE3 was my first choice, but I can't stand KDE4.
AND KDE3 was to resource hungry for an old PC I used, it was the perfect
desktop for my current PC.
KDE3 was able to handle windows size, IIRC also positions, but IIRC it
couldn't handle the work space.

Well, jack session manager can do that all, but it depend on the
implementation in the application witch settings gone be restored.
It will not be a good Idea when jack deals with window managers, so it
is up to the application to do that.
Aktuell, as a example, gxtuner restore his size, position and also the
work space next to all other settings he use.

My implementation didn't work with compitz as far I know, but, I haven't
test this, because I didn't use compitz. (A workaround for compitz is

In use is gdkx.h witch is a gdk wrapper to xlib.
This works with all desktop managers witch respect the standards from
freedesktop.org
The related functions to get and set the workspace could be found in

check for support: XInternAtom(display, "_NET_WM_DESKTOP", True) != None
get: XGetWindowProperty()
set: XInternAtom(); XSendEvent();
It takes 10-20 lines of code to set the the workspace because you need
to send a Xevent; but searching the web for _NET_WM_DESKTOP and the two
function will point you to example code.
