... With intel core duo (not core 2 duo).
What a bitch! But I've been able to boot kxstudio and Ubuntu studio (32bit) versions
from live USB. I shrunk the HFS+ partition to make room and installed Ubuntu studio to the
new ext4 part. Won't install the boot loader (coz of EFI)... rEFIt & rEFInd
don't seem to be getting it done to recognize the images on the ext4 partition.
I've read thru many of the Ubuntu and like tutorials. Any simple clues to getting this
done? I like Linux on the Mac.. It has optical spdif out on regular sound card for 1
thing. And it's a 2ghz dual core, working a little better than the Vaio 1.6 dual core
of the same era.

Hi Russell.
I've suffered a little pain to install Musix(Debian) and Kubuntu in a Mac
Pro of a musician friend, but after some cycles of trial and error, we
succeeded.

I just installed Lubuntu 14.04.1 (32 bit) on a MacBook1,1 without any
problems. I had it install grub2 on the linux partition
(e.g. /dev/sda3, not /dev/sda!) and rEFInd picked it up the very next
boot. Unless Ubuntu studio's kernel is built with the EFI stub loader
(in which case you can copy it to the EFI partition and tell rEFInd to
boot it directly), you're going to have to get that boot loader
installed before rEFIt or rEFInd will see your linux install. Good luck!

Thanks for info, especially on the same platform. So much info blurb on
macintosh that changes year after year it seems.
I think i tried something like that. IIRC, the installer with Ubstudio
would not allow it to be installed to, in this case. sda4. Partitions are;
|| - FAT32 efi (Like 250mb~ sda1)- || - HFS+ (160gb~sda2) - || - swap (2g
sda3) - || -EXT4 (150gb~sda4) - || of 320gb drive (sda) and booted from the
live USB boot. Not sure now if I tried from the boot screen to install
before trying. Hmm
Not sure if extra info reveals something simple Im missing. Continuing to
look...

There was one version of ubuntustudio/kubuntu where efi installs did not
work... I think it was before 13.10, but I could be wrong. The name got
changed in grub to Ubuntustudio rather than just Ubuntu and as it happens
this same variable got used for naming the efi partition/directory. The
grub name has gone back to Ubuntu in the last few releases (14.04 and
14.10 for sure)
There was a file in /etc/default/grub.d that has since been removed. it
would have the text ubuntustudio as part of the name... After a reboot and
sw update the next reboot should be ok... I think. Or remove the file and
redo grub.

I suspect it may have been the installer used in 13.10. I finally, out of sheer
frustration, tried Kxstudio from a USB stick. 12.0.3 386. Installed first time and rEFIt
picked it up 1st boot thereafter with the boot loader installed to sda3.
Shame... While Kxstudio is, and has been my go-to distro for a long time, I liked how the
kernel and several other automagic setup tools worked.
