Hi,
I have an HP 7965 desktop dual-booting between XP and RH Linux 8.0.
The standard installation did not get the sound card working, and
every time I tried to use XMMS, an error message would pop up saying
that the sound card could not be contacted.
I installed the ALSA driver, library, and utilities as per the
instructions at
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php3?company=Analog%2…
and then used insmod to load them, also as per the instructions at
that page.
Now xmms and the system seem to recognize the module and the sound
card-I don't get any error messages-but I don't get any sound. I
used alsamixer to unmute the system, but I still get nothing. It
works fine in XP, so I don't know what the problem would be. Here is

are your channel faders up (not just unmuted) ? to make sure, start
xmms, then alsamixer and play with the settings (preferably *not* with
headphones :) - usually you need to raise at least the master AND "pcm"
or something like that.
how's the sound doing on the evil side (just to check your speakers are
set up ok) ?
did you try aplay somefile.wav ? if this works, xmms is probably using
the OSS output plugin, and you don't have the compatibility modules
running...
just guesses. you will probably have more luck on the alsa-user mailing
list if this did not help you.

it with headphones, but I guess I won't do that anymore. aplay
didn't play any sound, but it indicated that the file was playing at
4410 hz in stereo and didn't give any error messages.

chmod a+rwx /dev/dsp
It seems like you have everything working on the software side. If you
are using an amp have you turned it on or the volume up?

I did a chmod 777 /dev/dsp /dev/mixer /dev/sequencer /dev/midi
but it still doesn't work. I've never had any hardware fail to work
in Linux when the software said it was functioning. Even the RH
sound card configuration tool indicactes it is present, although the
test sound button doesn't play anything. Please let me know if there
is anything else I should try before buying a new sound card.

Well, you could always check the logs to see if anything funny's in there.
Why don't you post the output of

sound modules, so I think the only relevant part of dmesg is:

Well ..... hmmmm.
That's kindof odd, because the lsmod output below shows that the modules
do get loaded, and those names are only an alias for the actual module.
I use Slackware though, which doesn't use the modules.conf file, so I'm a
bit rusty on this.
You might want to comment out that section of your modules.conf, reboot,
and then load each module by hand and check for informational messages.

Makes me want to think that everything is okay, because everything seems
to be used. (except snd-seq-oss). I'm not a real genius when it comes to
modules, though.
Other than that, I'd grep "snd" around in the logs and see if there are
any complaints. Really though, it sure sounds like a mixer issue. Is
there a way to verbosify the output of the alsa mixer? Anyone else got
other ideas?
The other thing I'd do is post this stuff to the alsa mailing lists.

They shouldn't be. You can check with
ls /lib/modules/2.x.x/kernel/sound/
I remember something funny going on with the sequencer support around
the time of that release - 0.9.0-rc2. I have an intel8x0 too and it
works fine here.
Try modprobing without the sequencer and see if that helps. You could
also try installing from scratch without sequencer support enabled too.
