Century old player pianos rolls are dying. While their target player
pianos can be repeatedly restored into perpetuity, the rolls cannot.
It is important therefore that the content of these rolls be captured
in computer form in hopes of extending their life into the foreseeable
future. The process of scanning music rolls first generates a very
large file, basically containing hundreds of thousands of pixels. That
initial .CIS file can then converted into a .MID music file as a
byproduct of the process. The files available here are the final
relatively small .MID files which may be "played" through most any
computer's sound card, an electronic keyboard, or in solenoid equipped
pianos such as Disklavier, PianoDisc, PianoMation, and Pianocorder.
All are Midi Type 1 files, with identifying data imbeded within the
"info" area through the use of CakeWalk. As an aid for owners of such
pianos who wish to use my midi files, Carol Beigel has assembled a
very useful web site for this purpose:

The midi files downloadable from here are made available solely as a
convenience for personal enjoyment. They should not be used for
commercial purposes.

it appears that each time-period overused the sounds it could get out
of it's music instruments. The 90's it's filtery synths and LFO trix,
the 00's -- autotune... well back in the days when the pianoroll was
the sequencer and the means of (re)production, they could do all
these crazy trilling chords that no human normally would play, but the
pianoroll would. so that's why you have that whole (for lack of a
better word to describe it) "southern riverboat" (usa) sound...
The aforementioned "Blues" isn't one of them... another I really liked
and a nice development on the trilly pianoroll sound is the
roaring-hollywood-sounding-flamenco piano in the various versions of
"Valencia" ( http://members.shaw.ca/paud122/batch23.htm )
it must have been a big hit in the clubs at the time:

It is the Pasodoble Valencia (1926), by José Padilla (1889-1960). Was recorded
with English lyrics by Paul Whiteman and his orchestra. Famous singers like
tenor Alfredo Kraus have recorded versions, too. Look for it in Youtube for
instance.

I love pianolas. The conversion of ancient rolls into MIDI files are rescuing
treasures like the ragtime pieces composed (and some, even recorded) by Scott
Joplin. "Magnetic Rag", "Something Doing", "Entertainer" or
"Maple Leaf" are
already included in your collection, other jewels like "Pleasant Moments" can
be freely downloaded from Robert Perry's site at

This is not exactly on-topic, but it reminds me the pieces recorded on the
Yamaha Disklavier, a modern glorified and MIDIfied pianola. The Minnesota
International Piano-e-Competition participants record their performances
using these devices, and after the contest the resulting MIDI files are
available on the site http://www.piano-e-competition.com
For instance, this Stravinsky's Petrouchka, played by Alessandro Taverna

Many years ago I attended a NAMM show in Anaheim CA. Yamaha had their
own showrooms, including one with a trio consisting of Chick Corea, Dave
Weckl, and John Pattitucci. All Corea's playing was recorded on the
Diskclavier, I'd love to know what happened to those sequences.
That trio was astonishing, one of the best jazz groups I've heard yet.
