Anyone got any clues as to why I don't seem to be able to get any MIDI
messages from the MIDI/gameport on my SB Live! Value?
I've got an evolution MK149 keyboard hooked up to it with the supplied
power/data cable (power seems to work, the lights come on), but when I hook
up a midi monitor to any of the MIDI ports on the Live! in alsa, there don't
seem to be any messages coming through at all.
No config files, since I'm not sure which ones to post... Can do so if you
need enlightenment.

You are sure you have the right adapter-cable? There are two or three
"standards" spooking around in the world.
Mine works perfectly... :-) Just a plain SBLive! connected with my

Unfortunately, yes I'm sure. It works under that other OS fine. I just don't
boot into that one terribly often anymore. Perhaps a look at your config
would help... I'm basically using a slightly hacked up version of the default
setup from Mandrake 10.0.
This might be a red herring (probably is, I really have no idea what I'm doing
when it comes to midi and Alsa), but I just noticed
that /proc/asound/seq/drivers looks a little like this...
snd-emu10k1-synth,empty,1
snd-seq-midi,empty,2
Should there be something in there?

It says "loaded" when the particular module is loaded. (The external
MIDI port is handled by snd-seq-midi.) Some CVS version after the
1.0.7rc1 release deactivated autoloading of sequencer drivers because
of a locking bug when initializing, but this has been fixed in the
latest CVS.

As you can probably tell, I've also got an Echo Mia in the same box, and a
US428 (MIDI works fine on that) sometimes hooked up externally.

This is only for joystick support, the MIDI port is completely
independent.

I assume snd-rawmidi deals with MIDI? I was expecting to see something with
mpu401 in it. I would also have expected to see an options line which
specified the address for the soundcard's MIDI port (usually 0x330). The
proper answer to this needs to come from someone with experience of the new
kernels on Mandrake.

I have MIDI fully working on my SB live value.
Note that you need to "asfxload" the sound fonts:
asfxload midi/SoundFonts/PC51f.sf2 ( as root ) for sound to come out .
PC51f.sf2 is a very nice soundfont (better that the one coming on SBlive
CD) , find it with google.

Yeah, I'd already worked that one out in trying to find a solution to my
current problem. Not that I'm all that interested in using the card for MIDI
synthesis.
I'll have a play around with it when I get the time again. Will report the

You generally need to add a line to your alsa config file to tell it where the
MIDI port is.
